5/04: Quanta pushing into private cloud solutions for revenue growth
6/17: Quanta to strengthen software R&D for enterprise server business

_ cna-banner

Facebook is raking in massive amounts of money from one part of the world

3/27: Singapore’s Zopim to power Facebook Messenger’s Business app

_ cna-banner

<台湾>

⑧ 6/5: Indonesia’s smartphone revolution starts now
IndonesiaIn three to four years, consumers in Indonesia will only pay Rp 400,000 (US$30) for 4G smartphones, Indonesia’s tech minister Rudiantara announced last month. 4G technology is only now beginning to enter Indonesia on a large scale. All three major operators are currently engaged in country-wide 4G infrastructure upgrades. And while Indonesia has a mobile phone penetration of over 100 percent, as little as 23 percent of those are smartphones.

⑨ 6/1: LG U+ finishing up mega data center
Image1.gifPYEONGCHON, Gyeonggi – To the trained tech eye, it is obvious how a huge dark gray building in Pyeongchon, Gyeonggi, still under construction will be used.  The structure – the size of 12 soccer stadiums – is telecommunications company LG U+’s data center. And it will be Asia’s largest when completed in July.  The nation’s third largest telecom company will invite corporate clients to locate their servers and storage devices at Pyeongchon Mega Center.  Data centers house servers, cables and connections to the Internet with supporting equipment for supplying power, cooling and fire protection.

⑩ 5/22: Qualcomm to step out of TSMC top-5 client list in 2H15
TaiwanQualcomm may not serve as one of the top-five clients for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in the second half of 2015 as the US-based chipmaker has placed more 14nm orders with Samsung Electronics, while giving more 28nm orders to United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), according to industry sources. Qualcomm’s decision may aim to reduce its reliance on TSMC and to avoid its previous experience of not being able to gain enough 28nm foundry capacity from TSMC, the sources noted.

_ cna-banner

2014/7/2: NZ govt takes anchor tenancy on Hawaiki cable
2014/12/19: Telstra eyes undersea cable company Pacnet
2015/5/8: Australia-US project achieves SDN routing breakthrough

Telekom Malaysia/Cambodia Telcotech/Symphony Communication of Thailand

ChinaWith price competition escalating and squeezing profitability in the global tablet computer sector, many manufacturer have shifted their production capacity to smartphones in a bid to find alternative profit sources, Shanghai’s China Business News reports. In a saturated worldwide market, tablet sales growth started to moderate in 2014 from the skyrocketing growth seen in the past, the report said. In addition to a price war, a relatively long life expectancy of tablets has also slowed down market demand.

④ 4/22: China’s Huawei targets July launch for public cloud service in China
ChinaChinese telecom equipment maker Huawei Technologies said on Tuesday it will launch its public cloud computing services for Chinese corporate customers in July, becoming the latest Chinese company to enter the fast-growing market. Speaking at Huawei’s Global Analyst Summit in Shenzhen on Tuesday, Huawei rotating chief executive Eric Xu did not name the Chinese telecom carrier with which it would partner to offer the service. But Xu said the strategy would not create competitive friction with Chinese carriers, which have already indicated they plan to offer public cloud services.

⑤ 5/16: TSMC expected to win most Apple A9 chip orders
TaiwanTAIPEI — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC, 台積電) is expected to win the majority of orders from Apple Inc. for next-generation A9 chips that will be used in new iPhones, as its production processes are faster than rival Samsung Electronics Co., according to an Asia-based brokerage firm. “Market disputes over how many A9 (chip) orders TSMC would gain from Apple against Samsung are coming to an end, in our opinion,” the brokerage firm said, adding that TSMC’s manufacturing processes were superior.

⑥ 4/18: Alibaba helps Sinopec with cloud computing, big data
ChinaChinese e-commerce titan Alibaba Group Holding Ltd has tied up with Sinopec, Asia’s biggest oil refiner, to provide cloud computing services and ‘big data’ analysis, the companies said. The link-up was for technical services and did not involve equity cooperation, China Petroleum & Chemical Corp, or Sinopec, said on its official microblog. It did not say how much money was involved. Cooperation between Alibaba, a poster child for private enterprise in China, and one of the country’s biggest state-owned companies dovetails with government policy.

⑦ 4/27: 21Vianet to Operate Azure Cloud in China into 2018
ChinaMicrosoft and 21Vianet, a provider of carrier neutral data center services in China, have extended their cloud partnership. 21Vianet will continue to offer Microsoft’s cloud in China, including Azure and Office 365 in China for an additional 4 years under the new agreement. 21Vianet acts as an operation entity for Azure, hosting Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure services and Office 365 in its data centers and handling customer relationships. A renewal agreement extends this setup to 2018 and suggests the partnership is bearing fruit for both companies.

⑧ 4/24: Rural internet users to grow five-fold by 2018, from IN
IndiaMUMBAI: The share of rural internet users will increase nearly fivefold to touch 28 crore by 2018, signalling higher online purchasers going forward from rural India, says a research report. By 2018, the country will have “as many as 55 crore internet users, of which 28 crore would be from smaller towns and cities, expanding at close to 40% a year from six crore in 2014,” forecasts a report on digital consumption by Boston Consulting Group (BCG).

⑨ 5/22: What is the best public sector ICT project in Singapore?
SingaporeWhich Singapore agency launched the best ICT project in the past year? Was it a smart housing scheme; a new e-government app; a transportation solution; migration of transactional services to the cloud; or something completely different? Will your agency be recognised during Singapore’s 50th anniversary year as a pioneer in using technology to transform service delivery? This can only happen if your agency enters the FutureGov Singapore Awards 2015.

_ cna-banner

そして、昨年5月の「Myanmar poised to have ‘60 million citizens come online almost overnight’」という TechInAsia のポストで、ミャンマーでもインターネットが普及し始めることを認識しました。

1024px-DSC014_Myanmar_Yangon_Paya_Shwédagon_Pagoda_Tazaung_Pavillon_(7181922960)Wikipedia

そんな中でも、2014年11月には、台湾からの「TEEMA to invest NT$14 billion ( US$0.5 billion) in Myanmar」という経済支援が行われ、それを追いかけるように中国からも「China, Myanmar agree on (US$7.8 billion)」という大規模な支援が行われるという状況になってきました。

5/4: Ooredoo claims 3.3 million subs
5/7: Telenor racks up 6.4 million subscribers
5/19: MPT adds 8 million subscribers since July

① 4/19: Android Wear is useless in China, so Baidu just created its own smartwatch OS
ChinaBaidu, China’s top search engine company, has just taken the wraps off of its own smartwatch OS. It’s called DuWear. Because pretty much every single Google service is blocked in China, Android Wear with its baked-in Google services is useless in China. That seems to have prompted Baidu to take a stab at it making its own. Kaiser Kuo, Baidu’s director of international communications, tells Tech in Asia that a “major manufacturer” is going to make a smartwatch that uses DuWear and it’ll be available to buy in June.

② 4/22: China’s Huawei targets July launch for public cloud service in China
ChinaSHENZHEN: Chinese telecom equipment maker Huawei Technologies said on Tuesday it will launch its public cloud computing services for Chinese corporate customers in July, becoming the latest Chinese company to enter the fast-growing market. But Xu said the strategy would not create competitive friction with Chinese carriers, which have already indicated they plan to offer public cloud services.

③ 5/19: MPT adds 8 million subscribers since July, from Myanmar
MyanmarKDDI, which on May 12 released its financial report for the fiscal year ending March 2015, stated that launching operations in Myanmar had boosted revenues for its global services segment, with the segment’s operating revenues posted at 320.6 billion yen (US $2.7 billion) – up more than 20 percent over the year prior. The company first officially entered Myanmar last July when it joined Sumitomo Corporation in setting up a subsidiary, KDDI Summit Global Myanmar (KSGM), to assist state-owned MPT in competing with then-forthcoming international telcos Ooredoo and Telenor.

④ 3/8: Chinese Internet Giants Eyeing Silicon Valley Data Centers
ChinaEarlier this week, Alibaba subsidiary Aliyun announced it was opening a data center in Santa Clara, California, as the first step in expanding the giant’s reach into the U.S. cloud services market. Alibaba isn’t the only Chinese internet company looking to gain data center foothold in Silicon Valley. Other heavyweights, including Tencent and Baidu, have been shopping for data center space in the Valley in recent months, Jeff West, director of data center research at the commercial real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield, said.

⑤ 2014: Taiwan server ODMs may benefit from Project Scorpio 2.0
TaiwanTaiwan-based server ODMs including Quanta Computer, Wistron and Inventec may obtain orders arising from the beginning of Project Scorpio 2.0, the second version of a project to boost low-cost and highly scalable data center infrastructure jointly by China-based Internet service operators Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent through collaboration with Intel, in September 2014, according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers.

⑥ 4/26: Gartner cuts forecast for 2015 chip market growth, from TW
TaiwanWorldwide semiconductor revenues are forecast to reach US$354 billion in 2015, a 4% increase from 2014, according to Gartner. However, the prediction is down from Gartner’s previous estimate of a 5.4% increase. “Concern is mounting about semiconductor revenue growth in 2015 as system suppliers start to grapple with the rapid depreciation in value of global currencies relative to the US dollar, excess inventories in the semiconductor and electronics supply chains, and the end of a PC upgrade cycle,” said Bryan Lewis, research vice president at Gartner.

⑦ 5/5: TSMC InFO-WLP technology to generate significant revenues starting 2016
TaiwanTaiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s (TSMC) backend integrated fan-out (InFO) wafer-level packaging (WLP) technology will start contributing significantly to the IC foundry’s revenues in 2016, according to industry sources. TSMC’s in-house developed InFO-WLP technology is expected to attract many orders including orders from Apple in 2016, said the sources. Qualcomm, MediaTek and Huawei are all pinpointed as potential customers of TSMC’s IC backend business.

⑧ 5/1: Chinese handset makers extend battlefield to foreign markets
ChinaHuawei unveiled its new Honor 4C handset in Beijing on April 28, the first day of the three-day Global Mobile Internet Conference, as the Chinese company eyes the market for smartphones priced below 1,000 yuan (US$160), reports Shanghai’s China Business News. Zhao Ming, president of Huawei’s Honor brand, said Honor has set its sight on the global market and will focus on products and services that meet the needs of users.

⑨ 4/26: Australian cyber security centre a ‘fundamental shift’
AustraliaAustralia’s new cyber centre represents a “fundamental shift” in the partnership between government and business, Attorney-General George Brandis (pictured) said. The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC), set up in November, “represents a fundamental shift in the way that government wants to partner with business on cyber security”, Brandis said. “For the first time in Australia’s history, industry representatives will be invited into the heart of the Australian Government’s cyber security operations.”

_ cna-banner

Industrial and Commercial Bank of China

3/12: Alibaba invests $200M in Snapchat
4/28: Xiaomi gets a new investor: Indian tycoon Ratan Tata

MyanmarThe build-and-lease contract is for a period of 18 months, according to the statement. This is a relatively modest rollout plan compared to other towers companies operating in Myanmar. Pan-Asia Towers, for instance, signed in early 2014 to build 1250 towers for Ooredoo as part of its phase one program, which is already complete. A report by IFC and GSMA estimates that more than 17,000 telecommunication towers will need to be set up by 2017 to cover 70 percent of Myanmar’s population.

⑤ 5/10: China to start punishing Taobao shops with fake product reviews
ChinaThe world of C2C ecommerce on sites like Taobao revolves around user-written product reviews. It’s one of the first things customers check before buying an item, and good or bad reviews also help determine where a shop’s products end up in the rankings when users do a search. That system has led to widespread fakery: merchants posting positive-but-fake user reviews on their own products.

⑥ 3/13: The PS4 will finally launch in China on March 20
JapanSony’s next-gen gaming console, Playstation 4, has a release date in China. Again. The console, which was originally slated for release in the Middle Kingdom in early January, saw its launch postponed indefinitely for reasons that were not disclosed. Now, the device has a new China launch date: March 20.

⑦ 4/27: Smartphone AP shipments in China to grow over 17% sequentially in 2Q15
ChinaShipments of smartphone-use application processors in China are expected to reach 122 million units in the second quarter of 2015, up 17.6% sequentially and 18.4% on year, according to Digitimes Research. Among the top-three AP suppliers in China, MediaTek, which saw its market share slide to 46.8% in the first quarter of 2015 due to competition from Spreadtrum Communications in the 3G segment, is expected to ramp up its share to 48.4% in the second quarter, buoyed by rising shipments of LTE and 3G products, said Digitimes Research.

⑧ 1/23: Taiwan server ODMs may benefit from Project Scorpio 2.0
TaiwanTaiwan-based server ODMs including Quanta Computer, Wistron and Inventec may obtain orders arising from the beginning of Project Scorpio 2.0, the second version of a project to boost low-cost and highly scalable data center infrastructure jointly by China-based Internet service operators Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent through collaboration with Intel, in September 2014, according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers.

⑨ 4/17: TSMC hopes to build wholly-owned 12-inch fab in China
TaiwanTSMC would prefer to set up its own 12-inch wafer fab in China, and management is evaluating the feasibility “aggressively,” according to the Taiwan-based contract chipmaker. There is no time-frame for when TSMC would build a 12-inch fab in China, said the company during an April 16 investors conference. TSMC has been advised by some of its major clients to set up 12-inch wafer facilities in China, and believes that having a local fab for advance-node manufacturing in the region could help it accurately grasp customers needs, the chipmaker indicated.

⑩ 4/19: Android Wear is useless in China, so Baidu just created its own smartwatch OS

Industrial and Commercial Bank of China _AC Stamp

4/28: Linode Opens New Data Center in Singapore
4/29: Interoute Sets Up in Singapore

以下のように、Huawei/VMware/Equinix/Centurylink といった大物が、その勢力を同国内で拡大しています。

JapanTOKYO: The Japanese arm of Amazon.com said it was “cooperating fully” with a police investigation into the sale of child pornography, after authorities reportedly raided its Tokyo headquarters.  The probe — which comes less than a year after Japan made the possession of child porn illegal — reportedly follows the arrest of two men in September for posting illicit photo books featuring children on the Internet retailer’s website.

③ 4/29: Repair of AAG undersea cable will take at least 3 weeks
VietnamThe Asia-American Gateway (AAG) submarine cable was cut again on April 23 morning. The breakdown is located in SH1 segment, about 300km offshore Vung Tau, which is a turn from the international line via Hong Kong (China) to Ho Chi Minh City. The incident will affect internet bandwidth from Vietnam to international destinations. Viettel, FPT and VNPT have taken some measures to restrict effects on Internet users in Vietnam. Earlier in 2015, the AAG submarine cable was cut on January 5 and it took two weeks to resolve the issue.

JapanChatWork, an enterprise social network, today announced that it has raised JPY 300 million (US$2.5 million) from GMO Venture Partners (GMO VP). It marks the first investment in the startup, which is based in Japan and California. (Update: a press release provided to Tech in Asia inaccurately stated the funding amount in dollars. The investment was actually JPY 300 million, or just over US$2.5 million at the current exchange rate. The text and headline have been updated accordingly.)

⑧ 3/20: Huawei filed most patents in 2014: WIPO
ChinaBEIJING: Chinese telecom giant Huawei Technologies Co Ltd became the world’s No. 1 applicant for international patents in 2014, a United Nations agency said, underscoring the innovative strides made by Chinese technology companies.

⑩ 5/1: Qualcomm and MediaTek to launch new chips for China’s 4G market
ChinaLeading telecom chipmaker Qualcomm is speeding up its development of 4G product lines and is scheduled to introduce a new chip with advanced carrier aggregation technology Cat 10 before the first half of this year, reports our Chinese-language sister paper Commercial Times. It took eight years for the Chinese market to reach 100 million 3G users but it has only taken one year to get to 100 million 4G users. This is the result of the rapid growth in mobile internet demand in the country, Qualcomm China head Wang Xiang said at the company’s innovation summit in Beijing on April 27.

Shawn Shu, a Huawei senior executive, said it would have been easier for Huawei to join the Vietnamese market some years ago. Meanwhile, the market has become too competitive with the presence of “big guys”. The low-cost market segment, priced at below VND4 million, was once dominated by Vietnamese and Chinese brands. However, Microsoft has jumped on the bandwagon.

④ 5/4: China unlikely to develop home-grown DRAM within 5 years
ChinaResponding to China’s ambitions to step into the memory industry, Inotera Memories and Nanya Technology both believe that it is unlikely China can develop home-grown DRAM technology within at least five years. China might be able to gain access to proprietary technologies through technology licensing, but building a certain scale of production capacity would still require a period of time, the Taiwan-based DRAM makers commented.

① 4/25: Huawei Will Soon Launch Public Cloud Services In China
ChinaAt Huawei’s Global Analyst Summit, the company’s rotating CEO and deputy chairman Xu Zhijun said Huawei will launch public cloud services in China in July 2015. This launch will put Huawei in direct cloud service competition with Alibaba’s Aliyun service. ② 1/28: Amazon Japan says ‘cooperating’ with child porn probe

③ 4/15: China DC server standard project 3.0 to announce at year-end 2015
ChinaThe third version of China’s data center server technology standard project led by China-based Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent are set to be announced at the end of 2015 and the project will cover more standards and adopt a modularized design to help reduce China data centers’ server purchasing costs, according to sources from the upstream supply chain. China launched the first version of the project in 2012 and the second in 2014 and the project is rather similar to the Open Compute Project (OCP) that Facebook has been aggressively promoting.

④ 4/18: Oxygen vs Cyanogen: a side-by-side review for OnePlus owners
ChinaOnePlus One owners are at a crossroads right now. The young Chinese smartphone maker is ending its relationship with the maker of its Android-based operating system, Cyanogen, after the latter struck an exclusivity deal with rival brand Micromax in India. In dire need of an alternative, OnePlus chose to build its own fork of Android Lollipop, which it released earlier this month. OnePlus owners looking to upgrade to the latest and greatest version of Android must choose between the two.

⑤ 4/21: Is Japan losing its influence in global semiconductor market?
JapanIn 2014, there were only two Japan-based companies – Toshiba and Renesas – among the top-10 semiconductor suppliers. Assuming the NXP/Freescale merger is completed later in 2015, IC Insights has forecast that Toshiba will be the lone Japan-based company left in the top-10 ranking. Japan-based semiconductor manufacturers wielded their greatest influence on the global stage and held six of the top 10 positions in 1990, IC Insights said.

⑥ 4/23: Malaysia signs private sector deal on Big Data centre
MalaysiaMalaysia has signed a new deal with a private sector analytics firm to help achieve its goal of becoming a regional Big Data hub. The Malaysian Development Corporation (MDeC) and SAS have signed an agreement to set up a Centre of Excellence that will build and test Big Data proofs of concepts for government and commercial use. The centre “will mobilise the country’s top BDA [Big Data analytics] experts to develop national high-impact use cases and proofs of concepts to drive BDA adoption and innovation”, said Ng Wan Peng, Chief Operating Officer at MDeC.

⑦ 1/23: Taiwan server ODMs may benefit from Project Scorpio 2.0
TaiwanTaiwan-based server ODMs including Quanta Computer, Wistron and Inventec may obtain orders arising from the beginning of Project Scorpio 2.0, the second version of a project to boost low-cost and highly scalable data center infrastructure jointly by China-based Internet service operators Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent through collaboration with Intel, in September 2014, according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers.

⑧ 4/24: Video streaming startup iFlix gets US$30M funding, ASEAN
PhilippinesAccess to a whole new range of streaming movie and TV content is one step closer to viewers in Southeast Asia, as internet media startup iFlix has successfully completed a US$30 million funding round. iFlix’s parent company Catcha Group and telco Philippines Long Distance Telephone Company led the round. ⑩ 4/18: Alibaba helps Sinopec with cloud computing, big data
ChinaSHANGHAI: Chinese e-commerce titan Alibaba Group Holding Ltd has tied up with Sinopec, Asia’s biggest oil refiner, to provide cloud computing services and ‘big data’ analysis, the companies said.
