For social birds who love to get their Tweet on through the TweetDeck apps, these are still set to officially go offline next month. The team confirmed on Friday that TweetDeck AIR, TweetDeck for Android and TweetDeck for iPhone will be removed from their respective app stores and will stop functioning on May 7. TweetDeck’s Facebook integration will also come to a close on May 7.

TweetDeck アプリ経由でツイートを取得とするソーシャル･バードたちにとって、来月にはオフィシャルにサービスが止められるという、あの取り決めは頭痛のタネである。金曜日のことだが、このチームは、TweetDeck AIR／TweetDeck for Android／TweetDeck for iPhone が、それぞれのアップストアから消え、また、5月7日には機能も停止すると、再確認しているのだ。 TweetDeck と Facebook のインテグレーションも、同じく 5月7日に終了する。

Back in March, Twitter said that it wanted to focus on the modern, web-based version of TweetDeck, and shut down the AIR and mobile apps. Removing Facebook is unfortunate given that many TweetDeck users took advantage of the simultaneous Twitter and Facebook feeds. But it’s also not surprising news given the rivalry between the two networks.

"In many ways, doubling down on the TweetDeck web experience and discontinuing our app support is a reflection of where our TweetDeck power-users are going," Twitter said. "Over the past few years, we’ve seen a steady trend towards people using TweetDeck on their computers and Twitter on their mobile devices."

As it stands now, owners of the iPhone don’t need to open Twitter and Facebook apps to upload a new status – they can simply pull down the notification bar and have at it. On Android smartphones and tablets, updating is as easy as typing a message into a Home screen widget. For that matter, Android widgets can even produce the latest Tweets and Facebook updates right on the Home screen.

That said, the Facebook and Twitter apps may have matured to the point where TweetDeck has become unnecessary. The same holds true for the AIR version for desktop: why install locally when a perfectly good HTML5 app resides right within your browser? Still, whether users want access to these apps or not, they will be going offline next month because Twitter has no interest in updating them with the new v2.0 of its API. The Twitter API v1.0 was discontinued as of March.

つまり、Facebook や Twitter のアプリは、TweetDeck が不要になるほど成熟したのかもしれない。同じことは、デスクトップ用 AIR バージョンにも当てはまる。完璧な HTML5 アプリがブラウザ内で使えるのに、なぜローカルにインストールするのか？それらのアプリを、依然としてユーザーが使いたいと思っても、来月にはサービスが停止される。なぜなら、Twitter は、それらのアプリを、新しい API V2.0 に対応させる気が無いからなのだ。これまでの Twitter API V1.0 は、すでに 3月の時点で停止している。

Twitter originally acquired TweetDeck for more than $40 million in cash and stock back in 2011. Twitter said that it was an important purchase because the client provides brands, publishers, marketers and others with a powerful platform to track all the real-time conversations "they care about." TweetDeck’s initial release was in July 2008 as an Adobe AIR application, and it supported other social networks like LinkedIn, Google Buzz, Foursquare and MySpace.

この話は、なんとなく耳にしてはいましたが、わりとソッコーだったので、少しあわてました。 Agile_Cat の場合、Mac と PC は新しい方の [青] TweetDeck に移行していますので、[黄] AIR 版が止まっても大丈夫なのですが、Android スマホでは [黄] モバイル･アプリを使い続けています。したがって、ここを何とかしないと難民になります。そこで、新しい [青] Twitter Mobile で特訓してみたのですが、使い勝手が違うので、かなり戸惑いました。そして、いま悩んでいるのが、任意のハッシュタグでスレッドが作れないところです。あぁ～困った。。。フツーに考えて、Mac と PC に [青] TweetDeck を出すなら、モバイルにも同じものを出して欲しいのですが、そんな気はないようですね。また、デスクトップの方では、なにやら Chrome 専用の Web バージョンをプッシュしています。なかなか良くできているようですが、永遠のシェア 2% Opera ユーザーである Agile_Cat としては、いずれは [青] TweetDeck も切り捨てられてしまうのではと、とても心配している今日このごろです。

Twitter has released the first stable release of TweetDeck 1.0, its recently acquired, multi-columned Twitter client. TweetDeck 1.0, which runs on both Mac and Windows, is the first release to be written in native code as opposed to as an Adobe AIR application.

Twitter が今年になって買収した、マルチ･カラム Twitter クライアントである TweetDeck の、最初のリリースである Version 1.0 が発表された。 Mac と Windows をサポートする TweetDeck 1.0 は、Adobe AIR アプリケーションの対極となる、ネイティブ･コードで記述された最初のリリースでもある。

The release has proved controversial — many users feel let down by the loss of a number of features that were present in earlier, beta releases of the software. Users must also register separately with TweetDeck before being able to use the new app — in previous releases, registration was optional.

It retains the well-known multi-column layout of previous releases, which are no longer available to download, but most significantly removes support for all other social networks except Twitter itself and scaled back support for Facebook.

もうダウンロードできなくなってしまった以前のリリースから、その有名なマルチ･カラム･レイアウトを継承してはいるが、 Twitter 以外のソーシャル･ネットワークに対するサポートが削除され、また、Facebook に対するサポートを縮小されている。

There are significant changes to the user interface that go beyond simply replacing the old yellow TweetDeck logo with the blue Twitter one. The author of each tweet is now listed in bold at the top of the tweet, while links, hashtags and mentions are also rendered in the same blue for better readability purposes. Only the time of the tweet is displayed – both day and date have vanished.

TweetDeck also defaults to using Twitter’s own URL shortening and photo services, although the original defaults (bit.ly and YFrog respectively) can be restored via the Settings menu. Navigation moves from the bottom to the top of the screen, while all of the controls, previously visible at the bottom of each column, have disappeared — you now need to click the Settings button at the top of the column to access them.

さらに、新しい TweetDeck では Twitter 自身の Short_URL と Photo Service がディフォルトになっているが、これまでの設定（bit.ly と YFrog）も、Setting メニューから選べるようになっている。ナビゲーションのためにボタン類は、スクリーンのボトムからトップヘと移動している。また、個々のカラムに配置されていた、すべてのコントロールが消えている。したがって、それらにアクセスするためには、対象となるカラム･トップの、Setting ボタンをクリックする必要がある。

The Settings window has been significantly cut back to provide a cleaner experience over just four tabs, but this has come at the expense of many advanced controls, including Filter, What’s Popular and a selection of controls for individual users, such as the option for adding them to groups.

また、全体的な設定のためのボタン（スクリーンの右上）をクリックし、メニューから Setting をすると、4 つのタブに整理されたエクスペリエンスが提供される。具体的には、グループに対して加えられるオプションとして、Filter および、What’s Popular、個々のユーザーに関する選択などが取り込まれているが、これまで先進的なコントロールは、このシンプルなインターフェイスの犠牲になってしまった。

Twitter acquired Tweetdeck in May. On announcing the merger on its blog, TweetDeck firmly repositioned as a tool for the ‘power user’. “By becoming part of the official platform, TweetDeck will now fill that role for brands, influencers, the highly active and anyone that just needs ‘more power’”, the blog post claimed.

Judging by early reaction to this first release since Twitter took the reins, many TweetDeck users will dispute this claim. However, it’s possible that much of the missing functionality may reappear in later builds, while other users have publicly welcomed the cleaner, less cluttered interface.

今回のリリースは、Twitter の傘下に入った TweetDeck として最初のものになる。そして、同社の示す方向性へのリアクションとして、数多くのユーザーが疑義を申し立てるだろう。しかし、今回のリリースで欠落した機能の多くが、今後のビルドにおいて復活する可能性は否定できない。その一方で、このシンプルで分かり易いインターフェイスを、歓迎しているユーザーもいる。

この TweetDeck 1.0 を知ったのは昨夜でした。さっそく DL して触りながら、この記事を訳してみましたが、かなりシンプルになっていて、アレが無い、コレが無い、の連続でした。ただし、この記事でも説明されているように、あくまでも Ver 1.0 なので、今後に期待したいと思っています。また、Web 版も、上記のとおり、Opera では動きませんでした。 Chrome と Safari に対応とのことなので、あとで iPad でも試してみようと思っています。ーーー

もう 1つの Twitter エコシステム – この 1年で倍増した Twitter API

Last April we wrote about How Twitter’s 1 API Gave Birth to 43 New APIs. One year later, there are now 86 Twitter-derived APIs in our directory. The growth of Twitter-based APIs outpaced Twitter mashups, an area we also saw a lot of growth. There are now nearly 600 Twitter mashups. It wasn’t even a year ago that we marked the 400 Twitter mashup milestone.

予想通りだったわけですが、それなりの報道が・・・

Twitter といえば、昨年の 9月に Even Williams がオフシャル･デスクトップ･クライアントを否定したように、サードパーティとの連携によるビジネス･モデルを模索してきたわけです。それが、API に課金するようになり、ついに TweetDeck を買収という形に落ち着いたわけですが、その理想が高かっただけに、ちょっと寂しい感じもしてしまいます。以下のリストは、日本時間の 2011年 5月 26日 4AM ころに、[ twitter tweetdeck ] でググった結果です。やはり、大騒ぎという感じですね。ーーー

Twitter is not giving financial terms, though published reports have pegged the price at $40 million. The San Francisco company said Wednesday in a blog post that the TweetDeck team has joined Twitter. TweetDeck will continue to be based in London and users will continue to be able to use the application. TweetDeck has 15 employees.

Founded in 2008, TweetDeck lets Twitter users organize the brands, celebrities, news feeds and people they "follow" on the short messaging platform. Facebook, LinkedIn and other social media accounts.

Earlier this month, Twitter client TweetDeck introduced Deck.ly, a new feature that enables users to send long messages to Twitter, bypassing the 140-character limit that is the signature of the "micro-blogging" service.

今月（2011/02）の初旬に、Twitter クライアントである TweetDeck は、新機能である Deck.ly を導入することで、このマイクロ･ブログ･サービスの印である 140文字のリミットをバイパスする、ロング･メッセージを Twitter へ送れるようにした。

The response from users has been mixed, to say the least. Some users are glad to be able to tweet without restriction on length, but many are frowning upon the service’s violation of that sacred 140 character limit.

控えめに言っても、これまでのユーザーから反応は、入り混じっている。文字数の制約なしにツイートできると喜ぶユーザーは少数派であり、神聖な 140文字の限界というサービスへの違反に対して、大半が難色を示している。

TweetDeck has just announced that in the few weeks that the feature has been available, that it has had over 1.35 million Deck.ly’s created. Despite some user protests, TweetDeck says that "The rationale for creating the Deck.ly service was primarily to fulfil our most user-requested feature and I take the high usage of the service as an indication we’re listening and responding well."

若干のユーザーからの抗議にもかかわらず、 TweetDeck は『 Deck.ly サービスを構築する理論的な根拠は、大半の TweetDwck ユーザーが求める機能を充たす。そして、ユーザーたちとのやり取りが示すように、このサービスは多くの人々に受け入れられていると思う』と、発言している。

TweetDeck admits that the new feature has polarized its userbase, and the latest update to its app does allow you to turn off the feature entirely. It also plans to change the layout of these posts, as well as give you more control over what is and what isn’t posted via Deck.ly.

The introduction of Deck.ly isn’t simply about helping users Tweet longer. TweetDeck, which was recently acquired by Ubermedia, also notes that part of the motivation behind the Deck.ly experiment was to find a way to generate revenue from "TweetDeck-specific ad-targeting on the deck.ly landing pages." Indeed those 1,350,000 longer Deck.ly tweets have generated 1.5 million page views.

Deck.ly の導入は、長い Tweet を必要とするユーザーを、シンプルに支援するというものではない。つい先日、Ubermedia に買収された TweetDeck は、Deck.ly による実験のモチベーションが、「 Deck.ly 対応のページへ誘導する、TweetDeck のアド･ターゲティング」から収入を得るための、方法を見つけ出すことにあったとも指摘している。現実に、135 万の Deck.ly ロング･ツイートは、150万ページ･ビューをもたらしているのだ。

実は、Agile_Cat も TweetDeck ユーザーでして、今月の初めに v0.37.2 にアップデートしたときから、どう見ても 140文字以上のツイートなのに入ってくるし、出ていってしまうという、『怪奇現象』に遭遇していたわけですが、これで理由が分かりました。やはり、140 文字は神聖なものであり、ごちゃごちゃと言い訳をつけて、ヨコシマな考えを押し通そうとする TweetDeck には、喝！と言いたいです。

でも、その他は気に入っているので、最新のバージョンを探してみたところ v0.37.3 というのがあり、このポストに書かれているように、Over 140 を OFF にできるようです。でも、ディフォルトを ON にするという食い下がりぶりには、も一度喝！ですよね！ーーー

TweetDeck のリアルタイム･ストリーミング

Twitter クライアントとして、TweetDeck を使っている方も多いかと思います。なにを隠そう、Agile_Cat もその一人なのですが、フォローする方が増えるにつれて、設定された時間の間隔で All Friend のスレッドがガクッとスクロール（?）してしまい、TL が見難くなるという状況になってきました。

そのため、このストリーミング・バージョンを使っているのですが、これは、たぶん、TweetDeck からのメールで知ったのだと思います。そのときに TweekDeck をインストールしたマシンが代替わりしたので、あらためてこのストリーミング・バージョンを Web から探して、インストールしてみました。ダウンロードは以下の URL でして、『 Replace する？』に対して、『 Yes 』と答えるだけで、すべてが完了し、その時の TweetDeck の設定も、そのまま継承されます。

以下の注釈にあるように、この TweetDeck のバージョンでは、User Streams API というものを使っているとのことです。

1: Most of your Twitter columns will update in true real-time

2: Twitter actions, such as favourite/unfavourite & follow/unfollow, that relate to your account are shown in true real-time

3: You have the option to also see @replies from your friends to other people that you don’t follow. This is not currently possible using the existing API.

項目1 と 2 に書かれているように、それぞれのスレッドがリアルタイムに更新されていきますので、すべての TL を、追う気になれば追えるのですが、ぼ～っと眺めているだけでも煩わしいといえば煩わしいです。 Twitter はスピードが命だ！・・・という方にはお勧めかも知れません。

なお、気づいているディメリットは以下のとおりですので、こちらもご確認ください

1: CPU がガンガン回る。これからの冬場には OK かもしれない。

2: メモリーなどのリソースをたくさん消費する。まぁ、当然かも。

3: 気に入らなかったときの戻し方がわからない。おそらくアンインストール？

最後になりますが、Agile_Cat が感じる最大のメリットは、『 Twitter API の消費が別勘定になる』です。つまり、複数の PC で TweetDeck を使うときに、1 台は普通のバージョン、もう１台はストリーミング･バージョンにしても、この２台は別の API を消費しているので、まったく問題が生じないことです。

ここまで書いて、TweetDeck の Web を確認したら、このストリーミング･バージョンが数時間前に標準になったようです。モバイル環境で、このバージョンを使った場合の、バッテリーのもちは、どうなんでしょうね？それと、２台のマシンで、ストリーミングを使った場合の API 消費って、どういうふうに計算されるのでしょうかね？とりあえず、いまの通常バージョンのマシンは、アップデートしないでおこうっとーーー A.C.

さにあんさんからのご指摘で、ストリーミングを OFF にできることが分かりました。右上のアイコン [Setting] でダイアログを開き、 [Twitter] メニューで設定が可能です。教えていただき、有難うござます。
