As smartphones shift from the realm of early adoption to mainstream use, the demographics of smartphone users are also shifting strongly. A new UK survey has found that more women are using smartphones now than men, and in general users are increasingly older.

It’s a pretty clear trend, if you look at the infographic provided by eDigitalResearch and IMRG. In 2010, when smartphones had only penetrated 38% of the UK market, 63% of smartphone owners were men and 37% were women. Contrast that with 2013, when smartphones hold 60% of the UK user base, and you have 58% female smartphone users and 42% male.

Older consumers are owning smartphones, as well, as the devices move from purely business use to consumer ownership. In 2010, a little under a third of all smartphones were owned by people aged 45-74. It’s a little hard to get an exact percentage from the displayed pie chart, but in 2013 that age group now makes up about 45% of the overall smartphone population.

That stats show other interesting phenomena in the UK: the rise of browsing as a smartphone activity, as well as the fall of Nokia and the rise of Apple and Samsung as smartphone manufacturers sold in the UK.

Here’s a shocker: The iPad 5 will be 15 percent thinner and 25 percent lighter than the current model.

This report comes from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, according to MacRumors. Before you dismiss Kuo’s notes as guesswork, it’s worth noting that he has a very accurate history with his Apple predictions. Either he has great sources, or he’s very good at guessing.

If Kuo’s predictions are accurate, the next iPad be about 7.5mm to 8mm thin and weigh about 500 grams (1.1 pounds). It will carry a Samsung-supplied A7X chip and cameras “with similar specs to the iPad 4′s.” The iPad 5 will also have a thinner bezel that more closely resembles the iPad Mini’s design.

It’s a pretty safe bet that Samsung CEO J.K. Shin doesn’t see Microsoft as Samsung’s top partner. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Shin said bluntly that “smartphones and tablets based on Microsoft’s Windows operating system aren’t selling very well” and that his company has seen “lackluster demand for Windows-based products.”

Samsung’s Galaxy s 4 went from rumor to reality Thursday evening and the initial response was generally positive. In BGR’s hands-on Galaxy S 4 preview, we said that the new flagship phone was better than the Galaxy S III in almost every way, though it still feels very cheap for a high-end handset. According to lead Apple bull Brian White, Samsung’s new Galaxy S 4 is a fair refresh but hardly a game changer that Apple investors should concern themselves with.

As such, we view the Galaxy S 4 as a refresh but NOT a game changer. We believe the iPhone 5S will handily outsell Samsung’s new flagship smartphone in the second-half of the year, while we believe Apple will expand its world with a lower-priced iPhone in 2013.”

White says the display on the new Samsung smartphone looks great, but the Galaxy S 4 is still “heavier, fatter and less refined than the iPhone 5.”

かなりマンネリ化している感じもする、スマホの UI ですが、これは新鮮ですね。 Agile_Cat 的には、あのスワイプで下の画面がふわっと浮き出てくるのが（1:15 あたり）、とてもステキでたまりません 
それと、Message Hub も便利そうですね。 この雰囲気が、あの QWERTY デバイスにも載ってくるかと思うと、次期の候補として ガゼン有力という感じです。 Nokia が One of Windows Phone マニュファクチャになってしまった以上、あくまでも地力で勝負していこうとする Blackberry は応援したくなりますね。残る問題は、価格ですwww

This isn’t exactly new news, but it’s still astounding. According to Canaccord Genuity, Samsung and Apple have 103% of the smartphone market’s profits. They are basically the only two companies making money manufacturing phones.

Google’s Chromebook devices have historically been low-cost laptops with a barebones operating system, but the company today announced the Chromebook Pixel, a flashier computer with improved hardware, software, and design.

The new HP Pavilion Chromebook is priced at $329, which gets you the bigger screen but the same internals as most other Chromebooks on the market: a 1.1 GHz Intel Celeron chip, 2 GB of memory that can be doubled, 16 GB of flash storage, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Although the display is large by comparison — most Chromebook screens range between 11 and 12 inches — it doesn’t offer higher resolution. It’s the same 1366 x 768 that most Chromebooks offer.

The kicker with a larger screen is that the device is heavier and will likely run less on a charge. Indeed, the Pavilion Chromebook tips the scales at 3.98 pounds and is advertised as running for up to 4 hours and 15 minutes on a charge. But, there’s a benefit too: Since the laptop is larger, it provides a full-sized keyboard and trackpad.

Will that help HP’s new Chromebook stand out from the crowd? Perhaps, but it’s sure to catch the attention of Microsoft. Every Chromebook sale is one lost opportunity for a Windows sale, even though Chromebooks are generally considered secondary computers. With one of these, a primary PC could be the old desktop at home that’s kept alive for another few years, instead of getting replaced.

Microsoft is also heavily pushing the cloud with Windows 8 SkyDrive integration as well as its new Office 365 Premium service that recently launched with some networking snafus. Chromebooks with integrated Google Drive storage and Google Apps take dead aim at Microsoft’s cloudy future for far less money up front. Of course, HP is playing both sides of the fence here as evidenced by this screen grab I took on the Pavilion Chromebook order page:
