20 years since Linux’s first release, and IDC says that Linux has become a billion dollar segment of the software industry.

The Linux Foundation has recently released a summary of the result of a survey on Linux usage. Currently, Linux has a 20 percent market share of all server machines in use today. Over the last year, 84 percent of those organizations have added to their number of Linux servers, and 80 percent expect that they’ll deploy even more Linux machines this year.

最近のことだが、Linux Foundation は Linux の利用に関する調査結果のサマリーを発表した。現時点において Linux は、実際に使用されている全サーバー･マシンの、20% のマーケット･シェアを有している。そして昨年は、Linux を使用する組織の 84% が、その数を増やしている。そして今年は、それらの組織の 80% が、さらなる Linux マシンのディプロイを計画している。

The Linux Foundation report admits that “enterprise users who are motivated to take a survey from The Linux Foundation are not an unbiased lot, but the size of these organizations, their buying power and technical prowess – as filtered by The Linux Foundation and Yeoman – can provide important guidance both for Linux vendors and developers, as well as their competitors.” But respondents to the survey represent some of the largest and most prestigious global corporations, including Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Bristol-Myers Squibb, NTT, Deutsche Bank, DreamWorks, ADP, Bank of New York, NYSE, NASDAQ QMX, Goodrich, MetLife, and AIG.

The two reasons most cited for why organizations select Linux over alternative server operating systems is cost and technical superiority. The three recent trends that are further driving the demand of Linux are cloud computing, virtualization and Big Data.

各種のサーバー OS の代わりとして、Linux が選択される 2つの理由としては、コストとテクノロジーにおける優越性が挙げられている。そして更に、Linux への要求を促進させる、最近の 3つのトレンドとしては、クラウド･コンピューティング／仮想化／Big Data が挙げられている。
