Hillel Cooperman quit Microsoft about five years ago to found his own software design company, Jackson Fish Market.

Hillel Cooperman は、自身のソフトウェア･デザイン会社である Jackson Fish Market を設立するために、およそ 5年前に Microsoft を退職している。

Today, Cooperman described a meeting in 2003, when he tried to convince Bill Gates that different software features could have different types of designs.

そして今日（3/12）、Cooperman は 2003年のミーティングについて説明した。そのとき彼は、それぞれのソフトウェアの機能は、それぞれのタイプのデザインを持つことができると、Bill Gates を説得しようとしたのだ。

As an engineer, Gates had a firm belief that interface design should be as consistent as possible — why rewrite menus in a bunch of different ways? It was a waste of time and code.

一人のエンジニアとしての Gates は、インタフェース･デザインは可能な限り、一貫性を維持すべきという強い信念を持っていた。 つまり、いくつかの異なる方法で、メニューを書き直すのかという問である。 それは、時間のコードを浪費するやり方である。

Cooperman believed that people aren’t that robotic and can handle variations. It’s more important to make sure the overall user experience feels good.

その一方で Cooperman は、人々がロボットのような画一的なものではなく、また、その相違に対してソフトウェアで対処できると信じていた。 全体的なユーザー･エクスペリエンスの向上を、確立する方が重要になる、という考え方である。

So he told Gates, "A shower, a toilet, and a water fountain all have mechanisms to control water flow, places where the water comes out, some sort of porcelain basin to hold the water, and a drain, but we don’t combine them into one thing to reduce their learning curve."

そこで彼は、「シャワーと、トイレと、噴水は、水が吹き出す場所で、陶器／蛇口／排水口などを用いて、その全てが水流をコントロールするという、共通のメカニズムを持っている。しかし、私たちは、それぞれの領域における学習曲線を緩和するために、それらを組み合わせて考えてこなかった」と、Gates に言った。

Gates paused for what seemed like forever.

Gates は、かなりの時間、押し黙っていた。

Then he finally came out with, "That’s just rude."

そして、「失礼なだけの話だ」と言い、部屋から出ていってしまった。

Cooperman lost the battle, but Microsoft has since come around to the idea that user experience can be tailored for different functions — just look at the way Windows 8 combines two totally different interfaces in the same product.

Cooperman は論戦に負けたのだ。 しかし Microsoft は、それぞれの機能に合わせたかたちで、ユーザー･エクスペリエンスを別々に仕立て上げると、その後に改宗したようだ。 Windows 8 に見られる、同じプロダクトの中で、まったく異なる 2つのインタフェースを結合する方法が、まさにソレだ。

Full credit to Cooperman for bringing Bill Gates to a near speechless state. In his earlier days, Gates was known for his blunt opinions, including favorites like "that’s the stupidest f-ing idea I’ve ever heard."

Bill Gates に言葉を失わせてしまった Cooperman は、いまや大いに賞賛されるべき存在である。 過日の Gates は、彼のお気に入りのフレーズである「これまで聞いたなかで、最も愚かでフ◯◯クな考えだ」を含めて、率直な意見の持ち主として認識されている。

毎年、冬のオホーツクを埋め尽くす流氷の下、氷から締め出されて塩分の濃くなった海水は、どんどんを深層へと沈んでいきます。 そして、表層を北上する黒潮とバランスを取るかのように、日本海溝をつたって南下し、はるか南方で海面に浮上し、こんどは黒潮となって北上していくのだそうです。 暗くて寒い、南への移動とは異なり、北への旅程は多彩です。 あるものは、水蒸気となり、空へと舞い上がり、雲を作り、雨を降らせ、私たちに命を与えてくれます。 そして、無数の小川から大河を作り、またオホーツクの海へと帰っていきます。 この、一巡するのに 3,000年～4,000年も要し、あらゆる生命の体内をも経路とするフローですが、人類の頭脳に蓄積された情報を運び、世界中の人々に知を伝えていくネットワークに、なんとなく似ている感じがします。ひょっとすると、Hillel Cooperman さんも、似たようなイメージを持っていた、、、だけなのかも？ーーー
