Traditional PC shipments are set to decline in 2012 for the first time in over a decade while sales of mobile computing devices such as smartphones and tablets continue to increase and cannibalize PC sales.

従来からの PC の出荷数だが、2012年は衰退すると予測されている。それは、この 10年来で初めてのことである。その一方で、スマートフォンやタブレットといった、モバイル･コンピューティング･デバイスが、PC マーケットを破壊しながら、その販売量を増大させている。

Even so, there are expected to be 1.5 billion devices running Windows by the end of the year, compared to 608 million using Android. The latest numbers from Gartner Research paint an interesting picture, however, suggesting that Google’s (GOOG) operating system will soon be on more computing devices than Microsoft’s (MSFT) according to Reuters.

だからと言って、今年の終わりの時点で、Windows を実行するデバイスが 15億台あるのに対して、Android を使うものは 6億800万台に過ぎない。この、Gartner Research による最新データは、きわめて興味深いものである。しかし、間もなく Google (GOOG) が Microsoft (MSFT) を追い抜き、最も多くのオペレーティング･システムを、コンピューティング･デバイス上に提供する存在になると、Reuters は示唆している。

At the end of 2016, the total number of computers, smartphones and tablets running Android is estimated to reach 2.3 billion units, compared to 2.28 billion Windows devices.

2016 年の終わりまでに、Android を実行するコンピュータ／スマートフォン／タブレットの総数は、23億台に届くと推定される。それに対して、Windows デバイスは 22.8億台となる。

While Microsoft’s operating system has dominated the market for the last two decades, the company has struggled recently in the growing mobile space.

この 20年間にわたり、Microsoft の OS がマーケットを支配してきたが、成長の著しいモバイル･スペースにおいて、同社は苦闘している。

2016 年の年末まで、ちょうど 4年間です。おそらく、今年の Android は、4億台くらいのペースで来ていますので、それまでに 23億台というのは、それほど唐突な数字ではありません。その他にも、Android Folk である Amazon Kindle Fire などを加えると、さらに大きな勢力になり、また Chromebook もあるという状況です。もちろん、Mac OS と iOS も、きわめて巨大なシェアを有しています。逆に言うと、これまでのような一人勝ちパターンは、どう頑張っても、誰も手にできないような時代に入ったのでしょう。
