Verizon Wireless will reportedly allow subscribers to charge Google Play purchases directly to their bill, up to $25 per month per phone.

Verizon Wireless has undoubtedly been one of the biggest advocates of Google’s Android platform since its early years. The exclusive Droid line is evidence enough, once Verizon’s primary weapon when AT&T still clung to the highly-coveted Apple iPhone. The Big Red put so much faith into this exclusive line that it licensed the Droid name from Lucas Licensing, a subsidiary of Lucasfilm. Expensive was this licensing? Probably.

So news that Verizon may enable Google Play carrier billing isn’t all that surprising. Essentially this would allow consumers to make purchases on Google Play including Android apps, movies, TV shows, books and more, and have those purchases charged on their Verizon bill. Naturally you’ll need to be a Verizon subscriber and use an Android device purchased through Verizon to take advantage of carrier billing.

Yet this luxury may become problem. It could be easy to rack up the charges, especially when Google goes nuts and starts discounting apps, music and other media in retaliation to special offers provided by Amazon and Apple. The bill shock could be devastating, so Verizon will supposedly set a $25 monthly spending limit on each phone to prevent death by numbers.

News of Google Play carrier billing arrives by way of an internal Verizon screenshot. The new service is supposedly starting on October 18 (tomorrow), but so far Verizon hasn’t taken the usual PR route and distributed the announcement through the proper news channels. If it doesn’t take place this week, there’s a good chance Verizon and Google may be waiting to attack next Thursday, October 25, just one day prior to the launch of Windows 8.

Google Play を介したキャリア課金のニュースは、Verizon 内部からのスクリーンショットにより知り得たものである。おそらく、この新しいサービスは 10月18日に（明日）スタートしている。しかし、これまでのところ Verizon は、いつもの PR ルートから適切なニュース･チャンネルを介して、アナウンスメントを配信していないようだ。もし、今週中にアナウンスされないなら、Verizon と Google は来週の木曜日（10月25日）に、つまり Windows 8 がローンチされる前日に、それをぶつけてくる可能性が高い。

Will consumers be able to charge Google Play purchases to their Verizon account using a non-Verizon device like the Nexus 7? That remains to be seen – it’s possible if the user’s Google Play account is somehow tied to their Verizon account. As it stands now, Verizon-specific services other than its FiOS apps can’t be purchased on a non-Verizon device, but do show up under My Apps / All.

また、Nexus 7 のような non-Verizon のデバイスを使うために、カスタマたちは Google Play を介して、Verizon からの課金を処理できるのだろうか？それについては、確認しなければならない。もしユーザーの Google Play アカウントが、何らかのかたちで Verizon アカウントに結び付けられているなら、それが可能になる。現状では、FiOS アプリ以外の Verizon 固有のサービスは、non-Verizon デバイスでは購入できないが、My Apps / All に表示される。

One reason Verizon may be putting a cap on carrier billing is because the Big Red offers an Android app market of its own. The company is also gearing up to launch Redbox Instant later this year which will not only offer a subscription service and rentals, but downloadable purchases as well.

Verizon がキャリア課金に制限を設けるかもしれない理由として、Big Red 自身の Android アプリ･マーケットを提供するという可能性がある。同社は、年末に Redbox Instant をローンチするために、準備を整えている最中だ。そこでは、サブスクリプション･サービスとレンタルだけではなく、ダウンロードによる購入も可能になるだろう。

どんどんと充実してくる Google Play ですが、まだ未確定 (?) な情報とはいえ、Verizon の課金を代行するとは、ちょっとビックリな話です。一言で言って、それだけ、モバイル･マーケット･プレイスのポジションが向上し、また、不可欠なものとして認識されてきた証明なのでしょう。しして、Amazon に対する差別化を、という意図が含まれているのかもしれません。とても興味深い話です。
