Amazon makes a pretty good case for its Kindle Fire HD and Paperwhite with prices as low as $199 and $119 respectively, but it turns out there’s more at work than just special offers to keep them affordable.

Amazon は、Kindle Fire HD と Paperwhite に関して、$199 と $119 という低価格を設定することで、きわめて良い状況を作り出している。しかし、その買いやすさを維持するという、特別なオファーを提供するだけではなく、そこには、より多くの努力があると分かる。

In an interview with the BBC, the company’s head honcho Jeff Bezos revealed that they can keep the price tags reasonable since they don’t turn a profit on the devices.

BBC とのインタビューにおいて、同社の最高責任者である Jeff Bezos は、それらのデバイスから利益を得ないから、リーズナブルな価格を維持できる、という考えを明らかにした。

"Basically, we sell the hardware at our cost, so it is break even on the hardware," Bezos said. "We’re not trying to make money on the hardware." Instead, Amazon banks on making a buck when owners of the slates and e-readers purchase books, movies, games and other content through their digital storefront.

「基本的に、私たちはハードウェアを原価で販売する。したがって、ハードウェアは収支さえ合っていれば良いのだ。私たちは、ハードウェアで利益を得ようとしていない。その代わりに、Tablet や e-Reader の所有者が、自身のデジタル･ストア･フロントを介して、書籍／映画ゲームなどのコンテンツ購入するときに、Amazon は $1 を儲けたいと考えている」と、Bezos は発言している。

This doesn’t exactly come as a surprise, but we’re glad that Jeff’s confirmed our suspicions.

それ自体は驚きではないが、ある種の疑念に対して、Jeff が答えてくれたことを嬉しく思う。

Amazon.com にしても、AWS にしても、自分たちで定めたポリシーにしたがい、ブレることなく進んで行く姿を見ると、ほんとうにスゴイなぁと感じてしまいます。 Apple／Google／Facebook と競り合いながら、この 4社が、これからの IT をリードしていくのだろうと思います。ユーザーに、たくさんのメリットをもたらしてくれる、好ゲームを期待したいですね。
