Samsung reportedly launching a new Samsung Galaxy S3 variant, a smaller phone with smaller display. Can this device steal the spotlight and beat the iPhone 5?

伝えられるところによると、Samsung は Galaxy S3 の別タイプとして、より小型のディスプレイを持ったデバイスをローンチするようだ。それにより、iPhone 5 からスポット･ライトを奪い、また、打ち破ることができるのだろうか？

It looks like Samsung is on the verge of adding a new flagship smartphone that will compete with Apple’s iPhone 5. According to a new rumor posted online, based on an official invite from Samsung, the South Korean tech giant will launch a new Android-based device later this year that will feature a smaller touchscreen display to lure customers who are not willing to carry a big phone (like the Samsung Galaxy S3 with 4.8-inch display and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 with 5.5-inch).

いまにも Samsung は、Apple の iPhone 5 と競合する新しいフラッグシップ･スマートフォンを、そのラインナップとして加えるように思える。Samsung からのオフィシャルな招待状に基づく、オンラインでポストされたウワサによると、この South Korean のテック･ジャイアントは年末までに、小ぶりのタッチ･スクリーンを持つ新しい Android デバイスを、大型ディスプレイのデバイスを、持ち歩きたがらない顧客に提供するようだ（Samsung Galaxy S3 は 4.8 inch であり、Samsung Galaxy Note 2 は 5.5 inchである）。

As reported by German site MobiFlip, Samsung Mobile will announce “something” on October 11 in Germany, and the invite sports the tag lines “ something small will be really big,” adding that the event will feature a “little sensation.” Smaller phones such as the iPhone 5 with 4-inch display offers one-hand operation, so it is safe to say that Samsung realized that its phones are too big for some customers. Samsung has declined to comment saying that it will update the public once the “product” is available.

German サイトである MobiFlip のレポートによると、Samsung Mobile は 10月11日に、Germany で「何か」を発表するようだ。そして、『 Little Sensation』が謳い文句のイベントの、招待状の末尾には、『小さいけれども、ほんとうはビッグだ』という言葉が強調されている。iPhone 5 のような 4 inch スマートフォンは、片手で操作できるところが売りになる。したがって、これまでのデバイスが、ある一定の顧客にとって大きすぎると、Samsung は考えたのかもしれない。 Samsung は、このプロダクトが提供された後に、その情報もパブリックなると言い、現時点ではコメントを控えている。

Four-inch could be the size of the new phone largely because Apple is popularizing the size again. Samsung’s original Galaxy S is the first Samsung Android phone with 4-inch display, followed by the Samsung Nexus S. Other mobile devices, including Samsung’s, followed with bigger display sizes ranging from 4.3 to 5.5-inch touchscreen display.

大まかなところで、Apple が 4 inch を流行らせているため、この新しいデバイスのサイズも、それに合わせて決定されたのだろう。 Samsung のオリジナル Galaxy S は、4 inch ディスプレイを持っており、その後に Samsung Nexus S が続いた。そして、Samsung も含めて、その他のモバイル･デバイスは、4.3 inch ～ 5.5 inch のタッチ･スクリーンを持つ状況となっている。

The Samsung Galaxy S3, arguably, is the biggest phone rival of Apple’s iPhone 5. Sales number show that the Samsung Galaxy S3 is maintaining its popularity despite growing demand for Apple’s new phone. Samsung said the Galaxy S3 is on track to reach the stellar 30 million sales mark by the end of this year.

おそらく Samsung Galaxy S3 は、Apple の iPhone 5 のライバルたちの中で、最も大型のデバイスとなる。Apple の新しい iPhone 5 が、その需要を伸ばしているにもかかわらず、Samsung Galaxy S3 の販売量も維持されている。 Samsung は Galaxy S3 について、今年の終わりまでに 3000 万台を販売するという、軌道に乗っていると発言している。

Meanwhile, the iPhone 5 is the most popular iPhone yet, apparently. Following its unveiling last month, Apple has already sold more than 5 million units, safe to say, millions of new orders will follow before Thanksgiving in United States.

その一方で、最も人気のデバイスは、iPhone 5 になると思われる。先月に発売されて以来、すでに Apple は 500万台以上を販売し、また、United States の Thanksgiving までに、数100万台のオーダーが追加されるだろう。

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is available on all four major carriers, Verizon Wireless, Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile (plus US Cellular), while the iPhone 5 is not yet available for T-Mobile USA, although customers can cut their regular T-Mobile SIM cards and use them on an unlocked iPhone 5 or the Verizon variant which ships unlocked.

Samsung Galaxy S3 は、4つの主要キャリアである、Verizon Wireless／Sprint／AT&T／T-Mobile（＋ US Cellular）から入手できる。しかし、iPhone 5 は、まだ T-Mobile USA からは提供されていない。そのため、通常の T-Mobile SIM をカットして、Unlock した iPhone 5 や、Verizon から提供される Unlocked iPhone 5 で利用する、顧客もいるようだ。

Agile_Cat が使っているのは、3.5 inch ディスプレイで、キーボード付きの Android なので、電車の中などで Galaxy S3 を見かけると、その大きさにビックリしてしまいます。その点、iPhone 5 に対しては、タテ長だとは思いますが、大きとは感じません。あのくらいが、ちょうど良いところなのでしょうかね。何処か、QWERTY 付きの、タテ長 4 inch キャンディー･バーを作ってくれないかぁ。
