Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard that the maps application in iOS is awful. It is so bad, Apple actually apologized. What we haven’t seen until now is just how badly iOS 6 is hurting usage of Apple’s maps.

A company called Snappli, which just launched a few weeks ago (see coverage here and here) is a free mobile app that helps people stay within their mobile data limits by compressing and optimizing mobile data as well as video. Today they pulled some pretty interesting data around Google/Apple Maps, based on data from Snappli users in the UK and US. 64 percent of Snappli users in the U.S. and UK have migrated to iOS 6 in the past few weeks. Here’s Snappli’s summary of what those users did after upgrading:

Before the upgrade to iOS 6, 25 percent were viewing Google Maps at least once a day
Once they moved to iOS 6, the number of users using Apple Maps was 35 percent
However, over the next 5 days that drops down to 4 percent

iOS 6 にアップグレードする以前には、それらのユーザーの 25% が、少なくとも週に一度は Google Maps を使っていた。
そして、iOS 6 にアップグレードに移行した直後、それらのユーザーの 35% が Apple Maps を使った。
しかし、それから 5日間を経過すると、そのパーセンテージは 4% にまで下がってしまった。

In other words, only 1 in 25 people are using Apple maps — and that number is still falling.This data is based on the 5,000 users that started using iOS 6 recently. Also, this data is a few days old.

言い換えれば、25人に 1人が、Apple Maps を使っているが、その数は、依然として低下していることになる。このデータは、iOS 6 を使い始めた 5,000 人のユーザーに基づくものであるが、それ自体が、数日前のデータとなる。

Now this is just one data point and not enough to make general conclusions, but I would not be surprised if this is just the beginning of more evidence that Apple users will not put up with degraded user experiences.

現時点において、このデータは、1つの視点からのものに過ぎず、また、その全体を結論付けるには不十分である。しかし、劣化したユーザー･エクスペリエンスに対して、Apple ユーザーが我慢しないことの証明が、ここから始まるのだとしても、私は驚かないだろう。

う～ん・・・この不完全な Apple Map が、なんで、こんな無理なかたちでローンチしてしまったのでしょうかね？ Google Maps を外すというトップ･デジションがあり、それに従って作るには作ったけど、最終的な仕上がりを検証することなく、サービスを開始してしまったのでしょうか？それとも、マップ･アプリケーションなんて、この程度のものという、甘い考えが支配していたのでしょうか？いずれにせよ、Tim Cooｋが謝罪したので、何らかの落とし所が、近々に見えてくるのだろうと期待しています。
