After weeks of back and forth and considerable anxiety, VMware, Intel and NEC are now Gold members of the OpenStack Foundation. The news comes out of Friday afternoon’s OpenStack board meeting.

何週もの間、話しが行ったり来たりし、また、皆さんをヤキモキさせた末に、VMware と、Intel と、NEC は、ようやく OpenStack Foundation の Gold メンバーになれた。このニュースは、金曜日（8/7）の午後に開催された、OpenStack ボード･ミーティングからのものである。

VMware is now officially a Gold member of the OpenStack Foundation, along with Intel and NEC. The OpenStack board met Friday afternoon to consider their applications, which were held over from the last seven-hour board meeting.

いまや VMware は、Intel および NEC と共に、OpenStack Foundation の Gold メンバーになったと、オフィシャルに発表された。金曜日の午後に開催された、OpenStack ボード･ミーティングでは、前回の 7時間会議で先送りされた、それらの企業からの入会申請について話し合いが行われた。

Judging by the Twitter accounts, the meeting was not without drama — some participants were apparently surprised and nonplussed that their votes would be public.

この Twitter アカウントから判断すると、このミーティングにはドラマがあったようだ。つまり、参加者の投票結果がオープンにされたことで、驚いたり当惑したりした人が居たようだ。

The notion of VMware joining this open-source cloud effort still strikes some as incongruous since OpenStack launched two years ago to build a technology stack to compete with proprietary cloud software — namely VMware’s vCloud. Many vendors, including Rackspace, HP, and Cisco, backed OpenStack as a hedge against both VMware and Amazon.

この、オープンソース･クラウドに労力を費やしてきた人々にとって、依然として VMware の参加は、辻褄のあわないことらしい。なぜなら、2年前に OpenStack が立ち上げられたのは、プロプライエタリなクラウド･ソフトウェアに対抗する、すなわち VMware の vCloud と戦うための、テクノロジー･スタックの構築という意味があったからだ。 Rackspace／HP／Cisco を含む数多くのベンダーが、VMware と Amazon に対するヘッジとして、OpenStack を支持してきた。

But since then, VMware’s stance has evolved. It is fielding Cloud Foundry as an open-source platform as a service and it just completed its purchase of Nicira, a software-defined networking vendor that has been an active OpenStack participant.

しかし、その時と比べて、VMware のスタンスは前進してきている。同社は、オープンソース PaaS としての Cloud Foundry を擁立し、また、アクティブな OpenStack メンバーであり、SDN ベンダーである Nichira を買収している。

There is still some anxiety that VMware will be a fox in OpenStack’s hen house, though. There was also some chatter that the rival Apache CloudStack Project backed by Citrix and others might be the more open and transparent cloud option.

しかし、OpenStack 鶏舎に VMware キツネが、潜り込もうとしていると危惧する、何人かのメンバーがいる。そして、Citrix が支援する、ライバルとしての Apache CloudStack Project に関する囁きもある。また、さらにオープンで透明なクラウドの、選択肢であることを望む人々もいるのだろう。

如何にオープンソースと言えども、そこに参加する企業群が、クラウドで成功するための OpenStack ですから、きわめて現実的なというか、勝ち抜いていくための戦略が必要なのでしょうね。先日にポストした『ちょっと待ってね VMware さん』から、一週間ほどが経ちましたが、長々と時間をかけずに、合議制で結論を出した OpenStack は、妥当な仕事をしたと評価したいです。この参加を認める認めないは別にして、迅速に結論を出すことが、OpenStack にとって最も重要なことだと思えるのです。ーーー
