The wait is over folks! The new Facebook app that was promised to us almost three months ago has arrived in the App Store. It runs faster, launches quicker, and includes a handful of new features.

ためらいは無用だ、みなさん！約 3ヶ月前に約束された新しい Facebook アプリが、App Store に到着した。その処理は高速化され、立ち上げも早くなり、しかも、ひと握りの新機能まで含んでいる。

The client has been completely rebuilt in Objective-C (no longer HTML5) and now has an enhanced photos feed, built-in Messenger support, and several other performance improvements… Facebook’s Mick Johnson explains the update:

このクライアント環境は、Objective-C により完全に再構築され（HTML5 でない）、また、フォト･フィードや、ビルトイン Messenger などを強化し、いくつかの点でパフォーマンスも改善されている・・・ Facebook の Mick Johnson は、このアップデートについて、以下のように説明している:

“Today we’re announcing an update to the Facebook app for iPhone and iPad that makes keeping up with friends faster and easier. Facebook 5.0 for iOS is twice as fast as the previous version when launching the app, scrolling through news feed and opening photos in feed.

We’ve rebuilt the app from the ground up, so now the app opens much faster and your news feed and notifications load right when you open Facebook.

As you scroll down your news feed, all your friends’ stories appear faster than ever. A banner lets you know when new stories come in, and you can tap once to immediately see the latest updates.”

今日、私たちが発表した iPhone／iPad 用 Facebook アプリのアップデートは、速さと簡単さという、みなさんの要望に応えるものだ。 Facebook 5.0 for iOS は、アプリの立ち上げ、および、ニュース･フィードのスクロール、フィードされた写真の拡大表示などで、これまでのアプリに対して 2倍の速さを提供する。

私たちは、このアプリをゼロから再構築した。したがって、あなたが Facebook をオープンするとき、ニュース･フィードやノーティフィケーションが素早く処理されるようになっている。

そして、ニュース･フィードをスクロールするときも、トモダチからのトーリーが、これまでよい素早く表示されるようになった。そして、バナーにより、新しいストーリーの到着したタイミングが分かるようになり、それをタップすることで、最新のアップデートを瞬時に参照できるようになった。

The app doesn’t look much different, but you do notice a higher level of polish than before. And boy is it fast. Loading from a cold start still takes a few seconds. But once it’s open everything happens almost instantaneously.

このアプリに関して、使用感が大きく異なるようには思えないが、以前と比べて高いレベルへと引き上げられていることが分かる。そして、きわめて高速化されているのだ。コールド･スタートからロードには数秒が必要だが、一度立ち上がってしまえば、ほとんど、すべてが、瞬時に反応する。

If you currently have the Facebook app, or you’ve deleted it recently due to hatred, we recommend you download the new version immediately — it’s a huge improvement. You can find it in the App Store, and obviously it’s free.

あなたが、Facebook アプリを使っている場合にも、そして腹を立てて消してしまった場合にも、この新バージョンを直ぐにダウンロードすることをお勧めする。そこには、偉大な向上があるのだ。App Store で、このフリー･アプリは簡単に見つかるよ。

それにしても、いきなり 2倍速というのはスゴイですね。 HTML5 から離れてしまうのは、ちょっと残念でもありますが、ユーザーにとって高速化は、何より有難いものです。こういうデバイス･ネイティブ･テクノロジーを用いた、代表的なアプリの高速化というのが、トレンドになるかも知れませんね。 Android 版も、同時にアップデートされたようで、ページの見え方が綺麗になりました。ただし、スピードに関しては、それほどの変化は感じられません。ーーー
