What things in your personal life would you turn over to someone else to manage? Would you put someone else in charge of all the photos from your wedding and pictures of your kids? At work would you put your sensitive corporate data like email and key documents in the hands of a third party to manage? That is effectively what you do when you move to the cloud. Steve Wozniak made waves in the tech press when he pointed that out. Move to the cloud and you give up some control over your data.

“I really worry about everything going to the cloud,” he said. “I think it’s going to be horrendous. I think there are going to be a lot of horrible problems in the next five years.”

He added: “With the cloud, you don’t own anything. You already signed it away” through the legalistic terms of service with a cloud provider that computer users must agree to.

“I want to feel that I own things,” Wozniak said. “A lot of people feel, ‘Oh, everything is really on my computer,’ but I say the more we transfer everything onto the web, onto the cloud, the less we’re going to have control over it.”

Is Wozniak right? Yes and no. You do lose some control in the cloud, but that doesn’t mean the future he predicts is inevitable. Many cloud providers allow easy export and download of your data, and most have great disaster recovery capabilities to make sure they can restore your data if disaster strikes.

And of course if you really want to be protected, if you really want to maintain total control of your data, you can try a service like Backupify (full disclosure, I co-founded the company), which makes daily automated backups of all your cloud data. With a secure second copy in another location that is under your control, you can be sure you are protected even if your cloud provider has a problem.

Keep a second copy. Use the same measures to protect your data in a cloud world that you used before you ever heard the word “cloud”. Then you can listen to Steve Wozniak, but ignore him.
