台湾財界が HTC 支援を、台北政府に要請か？

HTC has seen better days and is still having hard time convincing users to buy their products (rather than Samsung’s). Even though we like the HTC One X, it seems that its awesome specs sheet isn’t enough to take HTC back to profitability. Heck, it looks like the situation is getting super-cereal when Taiwanese central bank governor Perng Fai-nan called on the government to react and help HTC get its mojo back.

HTC は、より良い未来を期待しているが、自社プロダクツをユーザーに購入させることに苦労している（Samsung 以上に）。私たちは HTC One X を好んでいるが、その驚嘆に値するスペック･シートが、HTC に利益を引き戻すかといえば、依然として不十分だと思われる。そこでなのだが、台湾中央銀行総裁である Perng Fai-an は、まるでスーパー･カーギルでも求めるかのように、HTC を支援して、その魅力を取り戻させろと、政府に求めたのだ。

HTC is one of Taiwan’s biggest exporters and its fate is closely linked to the fate of the whole country. The other question is what the World Trade Organization thinks about the government helping a local company which competes in the global marketplace? And besides, I’m not sure how they can help it. It’s not like that more money necessarily boosts innovation and bring better products to the market. Sure enough, Samsung is sitting on a bigger pile of cash, but we all remember the days when Nokia used to rule the mobile world.

HTC は、Taiwan における最大級の輸出業者であり、また、その運命は、しっかりと同国の運命に結び付けられている。そこで浮上する疑問は、ごローバル市場で戦うローカルな企業を、その政府が支援することについて、World Trade Organization が何を考えるかである。そして、さらに、どのようにして HTC を支援するのか、私には見当もつかない。イノベーションを加速させ、優位性を持つプロダクツを市場に提供するのに、より以上の資金が必要だという類の話ではない。予想どおり、Samsung は膨大な利益を手中に収めたが、Nokia がモバイルの世界を支配してきた日々も、私たちは覚えている。

The epilog is still unknown, but apparently the country’s Ministry of Economic Affairs is already discussing means of helping the ailing phone giant. We’ll see where that goes…

その行く末は、依然として未知であるが、この営業不振のフォン･ジャイアントを支援する方式について、同国の Ministry of Economic Affairs は、すでに議論し始めているように思える。いずれ、結論が見えてくるだろう・・・

初めて台湾に行ったのが昨年ですが、台北の街中にあふれる HTC の看板や、地下鉄で HTC スマホを使う人々を見て、まるで日本における昭和の Sony なんだなぁ、、、と感じました。しかし、今年の台北では、Samsung の大きな看板が目立ち、この一年に起こった変化を、再認識せざるを得ませんでした。 Agile_Cat は台湾が好きなので、HTC には頑張って欲しいのです。 Android 4.1 の QWERTY キャンディー･バーで、Dual-Core を搭載する、イカしたデバイスを出してくれたら、すぐ買いますよ～～～
