Android Leads the Pack in the US with a 39% Market Share; iOS Comes Second with 28%

Android has been leading the U.S. smartphone market in terms of market share since a few months now. We already reported that Comscore’s numbers suggest that Android has a massive lead over its closest competitor – iOS.

Today, Nielsen released some updated statistics which confirm what we all know. Android is way ahead of the other platforms with a 39% market share, while Apple’s iOS comes second with a 28% share. Apple’s share, which had plateaued, has been growing again, since it launched the iPhone 4 on Verizon.

Both the platforms are growing at the expense of RIM’s Blackberry, which is now down to 20%. Windows Mobile and Windows Phone 7 together have a 9% share, which is expected to grow further, especially with Android’s patent troubles in the U.S. HP’s webOS and Nokia’s Symbian have a 2% share each.

However, when it comes to hardware, Apple leads all the way, with just 2 devices. It ( with the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4) has a 28% share. HTC comes second with a 14% share for its Android devices and a 6% share for its Windows devices. Motorola comes second with a 11% share for its Android devices, while Samsung comes in third with an 8% share for its Android devices and a 2% share for its Windows smartphones.

しかし、ハードウェアの話になると、Apple の 2つのデバイスが常にリードしている。それら（iPhone 3GS + iPhone 4）は、28％のシェアを有している。 HTC は、Android デバイスで 14％のシェアという二番手のポジションを取り、Windows デバイスで 6％のシェアを持つ。 Motorola は 11% のシェアにより、Android デバイスの中の第二手に位置する。その一方で、Samsung は、Android デバイスで 8％のシェア、Windows スマートフォンで 2％のシェアを持つ。

Samsung is expected to launch its bestseller – the Samsung Galaxy S2 – in the U.S. market soon. Considering the success it has seen worldwide, that should boost its percentage share significantly.

Samsung が期待しているのは、そのベストセラーである Samsung Galaxy S2 が、間もなくアメリカ市場で立ち上がることだ。その、ワールドワイドでの成功を見ると、アメリカでのシェアも、大きく伸びるはずだ。

For now, at least until Apple launches the iPhone 5, I’m tempted to say this: Apple can suck it. Android FTW!

iPhone 5 がリリースされるまで、Android が優勢であることを、少なくとも Apple は理解していると、私は思う。

HP Joins OpenStack Cloud Project

HP is the latest tech vendor to join the open-source OpenStack cloud computing project.

Hewlett-Packard is jumping on the OpenStack cloud computing bandwagon, a day after rival Dell unveiled a cloud computing solution based on the open-source software stack.

Hewlett-Packard が、OpenStack クラウド･コンピューティングの流れに乗ってきた。ライバルである Dell が、このオープンソース･ソフトウェア･スタックをベースにした、ソリューションについて表明した 1日後に、このニュースが飛び込んできた。

In a blog post July 27, Emil Sayegh, vice president of cloud services for HP, said the company had joined the OpenStack project, which was kicked off a year ago by Rackspace and NASA and now has almost 100 organizations on its membership list.

7月 27日のブログ･ポストで、HP の vice president of cloud services である Emil Sayegh は、すでに同社が、OpenStack プロジェクトに参加していることを表明した。言うまでもなく、OpenStack とは、Rackspace と NASA により、1年前に立ち上げられたプラットフォームであり、今では 100 以上の組織が、そのメンバーシップ･リストに掲載されている。

Sayegh noted that HP is the world’s largest technology company and has a broad portfolio of products—from PCs and servers to printers, software, services, storage and networking—that are all key points in a cloud computing environment.

Sayegh が指摘するのは、HP が世界最大のテクノロジー企業であり、また、PC と Server から、Printer および、Software、Service、Storage、Networking にいたるまでの、広範囲におよぶプロダクト･ポートフォリオを有していることである。そして、それら全てが、クラウド･コンピューティング環境における、主要なプロダクトになっていく。

“HP recognizes that open and interoperable cloud infrastructure and services are critical in delivering the next generation of cloud-based services to developers, businesses and consumers,” he said in his blog post. “It is our belief that close collaboration with developer communities combined with HP’s global portfolio are cornerstones to delivering the right, seamless and secure experiences for our customers.”

HP is joining a wide range of tech companies—including such rivals and partners as Citrix Systems, Dell, Intel, Advanced Micro Devices, Cisco Systems, Brocade and Mellanox Technologies—that have signed on to the year-old organization, whose goal is to create an open and standard cloud environment for both public and private clouds. All the code for OpenStack is available under the Apache 2.0 license.

According to the Website, members “strongly believe that an open development model is the only way to foster badly-needed cloud standards, remove the fear of proprietary lock-in for cloud customers, and create a large ecosystem that spans cloud providers.”

その Web サイトによると、「きわめて重要なクラウド･スタンダートを促進し、また、クラウドの顧客からロックインの危険性を取り除き、そして、クラウド･プロバイダーたちを網羅するエ･コシステムを作るためには、オープンな開発モデルが唯一の方法である」とメンバーたちは信じている。

Dell officials on July 26 rolled out their Dell OpenStack Cloud Solution, which brings together the vendor’s cloud-optimized PowerEdge C servers with the OpenStack cloud platform and Dell’s “Crowbar” OpenStack installer, which manages the deployment and operation of the OpenStack environment.

Dell は 7月 26日に、彼らの OpenStack Cloud Solution を公式に表明した。それは、クラウドに最適化された Dell PowerEdge C Server および、“Crowbar” OpenStack インストーラと、OpenStack クラウド･プラットフォームを組み合わせたものであり、OpenStack 環境におけるディプロイメントとオペレーションを管理するものとなる。

HP’s Sayegh said the company already is taking an active role in the OpenStack community.

HP also is a sponsor of the OpenStack Design Summit and OpenStack Conference in Boston in October.
