Facebook Acquires Group Messaging Startup Beluga

Facebook has snapped up yet another tech startup. Tuesday’s acquisition is Beluga, a startup that allows users to send instant group messages, photos and location information across multiple platforms.

Facebook は、もう１つのテクノロジー･スタートアップに素早く飛びついた。火曜日の買収は Beluga である。そして、同社のサービスは、マルチ･プラットフォーム環境からの、インスタント･グループ･メッセージ／写真／ロケーション情報の送信を実現するものである。

The startup’s offering is comparable to other apps like GroupMe (which just got location and image sharing in a recent revamp) and textPlus.

このスタートアアップが提供するものは、GroupMe （最近の修正により、ロケーションとイメージの共有に絞り込んでいる）や textPlus などのアプリケーションに相当する。

In a statement on the Beluga website, we read that the startup’s founders are “excited to continue to build our vision for mobile group messaging as part of the Facebook team. Beluga and Facebook are committed to create new and better ways to communicate and share group experiences.”

Whether that means that Beluga will exist as its own entity, or as a separate Facebook feature, or even as supporting technology behind something much larger remains unknown. The founders did say that the service will continue to function “for now” and that user data won’t be lost.

Beluga は、Facebook とは別の存在として残るのか、あるいは、より大きなプロジェクトをテクノロジーでサポートするのか、その辺りはハッキリしていない。そして、 Beluga の創設者は、現在のサービスが「しばらくは」機能し続け、利用者のデータは失われないだうと、発言している。

Microsoft announced general availability on March 1 of the final version of its Windows Embedded Compact 7 operating system, codenamed “Chelan.”

Microsoft posted a 180-day trial version of the final Windows Embedded Compact 7 bits to the Microsoft Download Center on February 28. (Microsoft officials refused to say when the Compact 7 product actually RTM’d, but @UltraWindows notes the digital signature on the bits is February 19, 2011.)

The newest Embedded Compact operating system is designed to power phones (including Windows Phones), medical devices, industrial automation products and retail systems, as well as slates/tablets.

For the last several months, a number of Microsoft OEMs have been touting new slates and tablets that will be running Compact 7. Microsoft officials have attempted to distinguish slates and tablets running full Windows 7 from those running Compact 7 by saying those running the Windows Embedded Compact OS are meant to be consumption devices, rather than consumption and creation devices.

* New developer and designer tools
* New technology for creating user interfaces
* New SMP (symmetric multiprocessing) support for x86 & ARM, MIPS

* New version of Internet Explorer (which is based on IE 7 with some “performance updates” from IE 8)
* Flash 10.1 support (which requires an Adobe license by OEMs who want to include that feature)
* Silverlight for Embedded support
* Improved Connectivity to PCs, servers (NDIS 6.1 support)
