After a busy first day of “virtual roads, actual clouds” the VMworld 2010conference kicked into high gear Tuesday as VMware announced acquisitions and partnerships and elaborated on its IT as a service strategy .

VMware released a flurry of announcements Tuesday.  CEO and President Paul Maritz and Dr. Stephen Herrod, CTO and Senior VP or R&D gave talks as VMware unveiled acquisitions and aligned with partners. Here’s a roundup:

• VMware acquires Integrien and TriCipher.  VMware announced that it has entered into definitive agreements to acquire Integrien, a leader in real time application and infrastructure performance analytics software, and TriCipher, a leader in secure access management and enterprise identity federation for cloud hosted Software as a Service (SaaS) applications.  Both acquisitions are expected to close in the third calendar quarter of 2010.

• VMware introduces end-user strategy. To support its end-user computing vision, VMware announced several new products.  VMwareView 4.5 is a user-centric desktop management and delivery architecture that delivers rich user experiences across an organization on a growing number of devices at any location – online or offline.  Within View 4.5, ThinApp 4.6 reduces costs and complexity by simplifying the application delivery process. Zimbra Appliance is a next generation email and collaboration solution delivered as a virtual appliance. VMware will preview Project Horizon at the conference, a cloud-based management service that will securely extend enterprise identities into the cloud and provide new methods for provisioning and managing applications and data based on the user, not the device or underlying operating system. To aid in deciphering all of the the new VMware model being presented they are offering on-site, end-to-end consulting services to help ease into the new user-centric application and data delivery model.

• VMware drives IT as a Service.  VMware introduced its cloud application platform strategy and solutions, enabling developers to build and run modern applications that intelligently share information with underlying infrastructure to maximize application performance, quality of service and infrastructure utilization. The platform, vFabric merges the Java development framework with platform services such as lightweight application server, global data management cloud-ready messaging, dynamic load balancing and application performance management. “We’re moving into an era where developers can build great applications and immediately deploy those applications onto a modern platform that provisions and configures itself on demand and intelligently runs and scales the application based on policy,” said Rod Johnson, SVP of the application platform division of VMware.  Described as an evolutionary path to the cloud, vFabric allows developers to build with what they are familiar with while enabling the choice of where to run the applications – on-premise or in public clouds.

• VMware drives IT as a Service.  VMware が紹介する、クラウド･アプリケーションのためのプラットフォーム戦略とソリューションにより、最先端アプリケションの開発を運用が実現される。そして、同社のインフラストラクチャを用いた、知的な情報共有が可能となり、アプリケーション性能および、サービスの品質、そしてインフラストラクチャ自身の活用までが、最大化される。 この vFabric プラットフォームにより、Java 開発フレームワークに、各種のサービスがマージされていく。 たとえば、軽量化されたアプリケーション･サーバーや、グローバルなデータ･マネージメント、クラウド対応のメッセージング、ダイナミック･ロード･バランス、アプリケーション性能管理などのサービスが挙げられる。 『 私たちが突入しようとしている時代では、デベロッパーが素晴らしいアプリケーションを構築し、それらを近代的なプラットフォーム上に、直ちにディプロイできるようになる。それらのプロビジョニングとコンフィグレーションはオンデマンドで達成され、ポリシーに基づいたアプリケーションの実行とスケーリングが、インテリジェントに調整される 』と VMware application platform division の SVP である、Rod Johnson は発言している。  クラウドが進化していくステップだと述べられる vFabric により、使い慣れた環境を用いた開発が実現され、また、オンプレミスもしくはパブリック･クラウドでの実行が、簡単に指定できるようになる。
