Facebook Credits Are Coming to a Target Near You

Target will become the first brick-and-mortar retailer to carry Facebook Credits, the social network’s virtual currency, the chain announced today. The virtual currency will make its real-world debut on Sept. 5 in the form of Facebook Credit gift cards, which will be available in $15, $25 and $50 denominations at the retailer’s 1,750 stores. The $15 version was created specifically for Target, the retailer said. The cards can be used to buy goods in more than 150 different Facebook applications and games such as FarmVille and Bejeweled.

This isn’t the first deal that will see virtual currency related to Facebook make its way into the real world. Last month, the social network signed an agreement with MOL Global — the giant Malaysian company that acquired Friendster — which allows Facebook users to buy MOLPoints through the chain’s network of more than 500,000 outlets, including cybercafes, convenience stores and banks. The points can be used to buy virtual goods on Facebook in a variety of applications and games. Offering such deals is a way for the social network to connect its online offerings with people’s real-world lives and potentially expand its user base.

Zynga, the social-gaming giant whose Mafia Wars, FarmVille and other games depend heavily on the Facebook platform, has also been doing a virtual-currency related promotion through the 7-11 chain of stores under a deal announced earlier this year. Gamers who bought specific products in the chain’s 7,000 stores could get redemption codes for virtual goods inside one of the company’s Facebook games such as FarmVille.

Google is getting into the virtual currency market too: Earlier this month, the search giant — which has acquired a series of social-gaming related companies such as Slide and SocialDeck, as part of its strategy to compete with Facebook in the social-networking market — bought a company called Jambool, whose main business is a virtual currency platform for games called Social Gold.

昨日のポストでは、GIGAOM の分析による、VMware のクラウド新戦略をご紹介しましたが、その中で、Verizon との提携に触れているのにお気づきでしたか？いうまでもなく、Verizon は世界最大の Vodafone グループに属し、アメリカ最強の携帯キャリアでもあるのです。

以下にご紹介するのは、8月31日に VMware サイドから提供されたニュース･リリースですが、そちらを読む前に、この写真をクリックしてみてください。今年の 5月に、NY の Penn ステーションで撮ったものですが、At&T に対する圧倒的な優位性を、Verizon が有している状況が分かると思います。

iPhone で儲けた金を、いったいドコに使っちまったんだと、Steve Jobs さんが泣き出してしまいそうなほど、AT&T の劣勢は否めません。以前に、ヒトラー総統の怒りというパロディをポストしましたが、その中で AT&T が貶されている背景には、こんな事実があるのです。

そして、重要なのは、この Verizon と手を組むのは誰なのか、そして、どんな権利を手に入れるのかという視点なのですが、そのイスに VMware が座るとは、5月の段階では想像もできなかったことです。その意味でも、この提携は、超弩級と言えるのではないかと思いますね。ーーー A.C.

Earlier this month, Verizon began field trials of this new service — Computing as a Service (CaaS) enabled by VMware vCloud™ Datacenter — that will allow enterprises to decide which applications to move to the cloud so they can react more quickly to changing business conditions. The hybrid cloud environment from Verizon and VMware will help enterprises leverage the scalability and cost effectiveness of the public cloud by paying only for IT resources consumed (server, connectivity, storage) while delivering the levels of security, performance and control available in private cloud environments.

IHG Trials Solution

IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) with more than 4,500 hotel properties and 650,000 guest rooms in more than 100 countries and territories worldwide is the first to participate in Verizon’s field trial. Being able to quickly react to changing market conditions is key to IHG’s ongoing success, and one way the company is meeting this challenge is through its technology and Web capabilities. For example, IHG experiences higher booking activity during holiday and vacation periods, and the ability to meet peak capacity by clicking a mouse is extremely helpful to the hotel company.

Verizon and VMware Deliver Enterprise-Class Hybrid Cloud Solution

Verizon’s latest enhancements to its CaaS platform are built on VMware vCloud Datacenter, leveraging VMware’s cloud infrastructure technology including VMware vSphere, the new VMware vCloud Director and VMware vShield™ security solutions. This enhanced platform provides enterprises with consistent performance and auditable security, while integrating key Verizon security features including layer 2 isolation and LDAP integration with the addition of role-based access control.

By using the same VMware technology as they do their own data centers, enterprises can take advantage of a compatible virtualized data center management and security model that enables application portability across internal data centers and all VMware vCloud Datacenter services, making the transition to the cloud virtually seamless.
