Web 2.0 Summit からのマテリアルとして、Points of Control というタイトルの、とても興味深い地図が提供されていますので、簡単に ご紹介したいと思います。 まずは、その但し書きから･･･

Web の歴史における、いつの時代にも増して、ネットワーク経済を制する者たちが、そのパワーを再編しながら、重要な Control Point での新しい権利を主張している。 その一方で、大小の反乱分子が足場を確保し、新しい領地を得ようと画策している。 Web 2.0 Summit のテーマにおいて、最初に反復すべき Points of Control へ、ようこそ！
『 う～ん ナルホド！』 というか ･･･ 『 それだけじゃぁ ワカリマセン！』 というか ･･･ とてもナゾカケ的な但し書きですが、まぁ 所詮は地図なので、眺めていくことに致しましょう。 以下の地図には、Agile_Cat 生息域を書き加えていますが、それでも構わないという方は、このまま先へ進んでください。 また、そんなものはイラナイという方は、上記の URL から原文をご参照ください。

･･･ というわけで、まずは全体図から説明しますが、地図の上部に張り付いている白地の地域（北極？）は Cloud of Infrastructure とのことです。 Agile_Cat にとって、いわば職場のようなところでして、左（西）から順に、Amazon、Google、RackSpace、VMware、Microsoft に青マークをつけて偵察中です。 ここで盗み見た情報を売りさばくのが、Agile_Cat の稼業でございます。 現時点で、Oracle と Salesforce はノーマークですが、今後の展開次第で、マークしていくことになるかも知れません。
そして、群雄割拠する 3つの島に注目して欲しいのですが、北側の横長の島をプラットフォーム大陸と呼びましょう。 ここでは、Agile_Cat が依存しているプラットフォームである、左から Nokia（携帯）、Windows（PC の OS）、Dell（デスクトップ）、Lenove（ノート） に赤マークをつけています。 それと、もうじきですが、Android Tablet が実戦投入されますので、そうなると Nokia の右隣の Google にも、赤丸が付くことになります。 立ち位置（使用する機器）により視点は変化しますので、そんな意味合いで捉えています。

続いて左下ですが、ここは新大陸と呼んで差し支えないようです。 形もアメリカ大陸に、似ているように思えます。 ここには、左上から下へ向けて、Location Based Services、Streams of Activity、Land of Identity と並び、それらの東側に Union of Social Network という広大な地域が広がっています。
実生活で、ほとんど移動しない Agile＿Cat にとっては、Location Based Services とのご縁が薄いのですが、その他の地域は重要な生息域なので、このように赤丸がたくさんつく結果となっています。
その中でも、Twitter @ Streams of Activity における WordRress からのブログ更新情報は、Agile_Cat の生命線であり、その意味で同国の繁栄を願うのであります。 Twitter がダウンしようが何しようが、ブログで追求するようなことはせず、どちらかというと肩を持ってしまう Agile_Cat の情け無さは、このような背景によるものであります。
なお、ご覧のとおり、この新大陸では、どこへ行っても Facebook と Twitter の支配権が強く、また、モバイルでも利用するサービスが多いように思えます。 とにかく、新大陸というだけあって、まだまだ支配権に変化が起こりやすく、一夜にして国境線が移動するようなこともあり得るでしょう。 実際に、Land of Identity の新興勢力として、Facebook と Twitter が領土を拡大中で、Microsoft 連邦に属する Live ID 支国に勢いが見られません。

右下は旧大陸とでも呼びましょうか。 どことなく、ユーラシア大陸に似ている感じがします。 この大陸には、Agile_Cat の本拠地である、WordPress 帝国があります。 位置的には、Plains of Content に属し、ホンコンかシンガポールかという、交通の要所に位置しているように見えます。
北西部の Land of Search で、Google に赤丸を付けているのは、WordRress への導線として圧倒的なシェアを誇っているからです。 いわゆる、60% を超えるシェアがそうさせているのか、はたまた、WordPress と特別な二国間条約を結んでいるのか、そのあたりは不明ですが、Yahoo と Bing からの参照履歴は見たことがないという状況です。
その下の PayPal にも赤丸が付いているのは、さまざまな武器弾薬を eBay で購入して、ココで決済しているからです。 PayPal は Fields of Payment に属していますが、マスターズ／アメックス／ビサといった旧国に対して、大きな勢力を誇っている様子が分かります。なお、南西部の Clifts of Media Access と、極東の Gaming Levels には、Agile_Cat は進出していません。
それと、南極に相当する地域には、Sub Continent Advertizing と Enterprise Island があります。 ここで Google に赤丸が付いているのは、年額で $30 足らずの広告差し止め税を、Agile_Cat がケチって WordPress に納めないため、 モバイルビューで Google Ads の侵略を 許しているからです。 親愛なる WordPress 帝国にしても、Google 共和国と結託して、領民の庭先に無断で広告を掲載していくという、ここは、まさに、油断のならない世界なのであります。

続報 – Bank of America の危機を救った Twitter
このサービス･ダウンに関する記事を集めてみました
これらの記事を眺めてみると、8月27日（金）に Bank of America のオンライン･サービスがダウンした後に、回復したという状況にあるのがわかります。 しかし、BofA（Bank of America）の代表者である Tara Burke は、その顛末に関する適切な説明を行っていないと批判されています。この、サービスがダウンした州は、Maryland、California、Michigan などと推測されますが、BofA サイドでは、全国的なものと認識しているようです。
また、BofA 側は、その Web サートが3時間以上にわたってダウンしたと認識しているとのことであり、そこでのパニックを防ぐために、この Twitter Help チームが投入されたようです。

これらの報道の中から、Agile_Cat が、Prime Writer News Network の記事に 気づいたのは、日本時間の 28日（土）の午後 7時ころだったと思います。 それから急いで対訳を作成し、ポストしましたが、週末にもかかわらず、とても多くの人達に読んでもらう結果となりました。
今回の件について考えると、企業としての唯一無二のオンラインがダウンすると、その状況を顧客に説明する手段すら持ち得なくなるという、とてもお大きな危機管理上の問題が浮上してきたと思えます。 そして Twitter が大活躍して、解決策を補完していったという結果に対しても、大きな注目が集まるだろうと予測できます。ーーー A.C.

このブログポストの日付から見ると、アメリカ時間の27日（金）に、Bank of America のオンラインがダウンしたので、Twitter によるサポートチームが構成され、顧客に対する状況の説明などが行われ、状況が好転したと読み取れます。
また、ATM といっても、単に ATM マシンというよりは、プロトコルまで含めた通信体系を指しているような感じであり、それを TCP が救ったことになり、さらに言えば、クジラばかり出している Twitter が救ったことになります。 つまり、ある種のプロトコル下克上が起きたと思えてしまうわけで、こんな解釈で良いものなのか、どなたか詳しい方に、ご指摘いただければと思います。

しばらく見ない間に、ずいぶんと機種が増えていました。 iPad の 7 inch も出てくるので、今年のクリスマス商戦は賑やかになりそうですね。 Agile_Cat の場合は、Archos 5（中古）を買ってみたのですが、なかなかの完成度の高さに、ちょっと驚いたというのが正直なところです。 実用性も充分ということで、、、今回のリストには乗っていませんが、Acer がアナウンスしている QWERTY 付きの 7 inch を、自分用の本命として待っているところです。 ーーー A.C.

Office 2010 で、2007 のクイック･アクセス･ツールバーが使えないとき、どうする？
カスタマイズ用のファイルをリネームすれば OK です
何度も確認できるものではないので、すべてのケースに当てはまるのかどうか、そのあたりが分かりませんが、Office 2007 で使っていたクイック･アクセス･ツールバーが使えない場合に、Agile_Cat が試してみた対処法をご紹介します。

Office 2007 では、右の一覧表に示されるように、Word.qat や PowerPoint.qat などの設定ファイルを用いて、それぞれのクイック･アクセス･ツールバーを定義していました。 これは、偶然に見つけたものなのですが、使い回しができるので重宝していました。 つまり、新しく Office をインストールした時に、他のマシンからコピーするだけで、その定義が再現できるのです。

ところが、Office 2010 にアップデートした後に、このクイック･アクセス･ツールバーがディフォルトの状態に戻ってしまいました。 そこで、所定のフォルダを覗いてみましたが、それらの *.qat ファイルはそのまま残っています。 ためしに Word 2010 を起動して、このツールバーを修正してみたところ、Word.officeUI というファイルを生成したので、これまでの *.qat を *.officeUI にリネームしたら、この問題を解消することができました。
つまり、2007 と 2010 の間で、ファイル拡張子が変更になったという、それだけの事なのです。そこで、Excel や PowerPoint についても、同様のリーネームを施したところ、それらの Office 製品においても、これまでの Ofiice 2007 クイック･アクセス･ツールバー が利用できるようになりました。
注記： 上記のイメージですが、Word を更にカスタマイズすると、Word.officeUI に加えて、word14.customUI が生成され、PowerPoint の場合には PowerP14.customUI というファイルが生成されています。 また、Excel と OneNote は、この *.customUI が生成されません。 それぞれのファイルが、どのような役割を持っているのかが分かりませんが、あれこれ試してみれば、なんとかなるはずと思います
なお、上記の *qat ファイルおよび、*officeUI、*.customUI ファイルの置き場所は、以下のとおりです。
Windows Vista / 7 の場合
[Users] – [name] – [AppData] – [Local] － [Microsoft] － [Office]
Windows XP の場合
[Documents and Settings] -[name] – [Local Settings] – [Application Data] – [Microsoft] – [Office]
もし、同じような状況になってしまい、新たに クイック･アクセス･ツールバー を作り直そうとするなら、上記の対処法を試してみてください。なぜ、こんなことになってしまうのかと考えると、Microsoft に言いたいことが出てきてしまいますが、まずは、使い慣れた環境に復元するのが一番ですよね。

While we’ve been trying to beam the idea of a solar-embedded iPhone into Steve Job’s head (so far successfully), a design company called Frostfire is helping out. The company has created an iPhone 4 case that has a rechargeable lithium-ion battery at the base with a small solar panel embedded on it that can extend the battery life of your iPhone 4 while on the go.

Twenty minutes of direct sunlight shining on the so-called “Mooncharge” case will buy you an extra 50 minutes on standby mode, or 5 minutes of chatting, so, yeah, not a whole lot. The battery can be charged via a USB cord, as well, and fully charged, will provide the user with 315 hours on standby or 5 extra hours of talk time. The case costs $70.
いまのところ、まだ充分な時間が確保できるというわけではないが、この 『 Mooncharge 』 というケースに太陽光を 20分ほど浴びせれば、約 50分間のスタンバイ･モードもしくは、5分間の通話が得られるという。 さらに、USB コード経由での充電も可能絵あり、その場合には、約 315時間のスタンバイ･モードもしくは、5時間の通話が実現される。 ちなみに、この ケースのお値段は、$ 70 とのこと。
Speculation about Apple adding some kind of solar power feature to its iDevices has popped up periodically over the past several years. In 2008, Apple reportedly filed a patent application that indicated the company was looking at ways to embed solar panels behind the LCD screens of mobile gadgets like iPods, iPhones and laptops. Embedding solar in gadgets could be valuable because, as devices get more complex and power-hungry, solar could provide a way to extend the device’s battery life. Our current battery technology is certainly not keeping pace with gadgets’ growing power demands.

前回の出張では、めぐり合わせが悪かったのか、、、6 回も国内線に乗ったのに試用することのできなかった GOGO in Flight（Beta）という機内 WiFi サービスですが、その後、無事にサービスインしたようで、この 8月の終りになってサマー･キャンペーン（?）らしき案内が届きました。
航空会社に関しては、American、Delta、UNITED などを含む 9社で共有されるサービスのようで、これなら使い勝手も良さそうに思えます。 それもこれも、この gogoinflight.com に、各社がサービスをアウトソースしているから成り立つのでしょう。 最初から、スケールメリットを出していこうという戦略が、ごく普通に展開されています。
ディスカウント合戦でフラフラの JAL や ANA にも、こんなふうなサービスの提供で、多少は稼いで欲しいと思いますが、日本で始まる場合には、各航空会社が自前で構築しそうな感じがしますね。
話は GOGO Flight に戻りますが、以下の価格表を見ると、どうやらフライト単位の課金がベースになるようで、そこに各種のサブスクリプションが加わり、たくさんのオプションが並ぶ結果となっています。お国柄も日本とは違いますし、どれくらいの頻度で飛行機に乗るのかといえば、それぞれの事情もあるので一概に言えませんが、1 回のフライトで $10 以下にに収まるなら、それほど高いという感じはしませんね。

This week, a relatively large group of technology companies, along with NASA, launched OpenStack, an open source project designed to give businesses and service providers a top-to-bottom, and already proven, cloud computing platform. I’m all for openness, but as I discuss in my weekly column at GigaOM Pro, it’s do not too difficult to play devil’s advocate and make the case that OpenStack won’t create true rivals for leading cloud providers or cloud software vendors.
今週（2010年7月下旬）のことだが、NASA 取り巻くいくつかのテクノロジー企業によるグループが、OpenStack への取り組みを開始した。 それは、大小の企業とサービス･プロバイダーのためのデザインされたオープンソース･プロジェクトであり、すでに証明されたクラウド･コンピューティング･プラットフォームのことでもある。 私自身としてはオープンな事象には大賛成であるが、GigaOM Pro の Weekly コラムの論評としては、天邪鬼な支持者と仲良くするのは困難であり、クラウドにおける主要なプロバイダーやソフトウェアベンダーににとって、OpenStack が本当のライバルになることはないと、指摘せざるを得ない。
Assuming the provisioning engine comes to fruition, OpenStack will undoubtedly see adoption from service providers wanting to offer cloud computing, enterprises wanting to build their own internal clouds, and IT vendors looking to beef up their cloud software offerings. If all comes together as planned, it should be a very nice solution. Just like everywhere else in life, competition in the cloud is a great thing.
そのためのプロビジョニング･エンジンが結実すると想定して、 OpenStack の取るべき行動は間違いなく、クラウド･コンピューティングを提供したいサービス･プロバイダーおよび、インターナル･クラウドを構築したいエンタープライズ、そしてクラウド･ソフトウェアを増強したいIT ベンダーに基づいた適用の確認となる。 もし、すべてが計画どおりに集まるなら、とても素敵なソリューションになるはずだ。 なぜなら、それ以外のあらゆる領域で、クラウドの競合が始まるという、素晴らしい展開になるからだ。
However, competition for dollars and developers is plentiful, including large cloud providers, software vendors and even other open source options. The idea of a network of interoperable OpenStack-based public and internal clouds is appealing, but it would require stealing business and developers from a wide variety of other proven, innovative and commercially supported offerings.
しかし、経済と開発における競合は熾烈であり、そこには、大手のクラウド･プロバイダーやソフトウェアベンダー、さらにはオープンソースも含めた、豊富な選択肢が存在する。 インターオペラビリティを前提とした、OpenStack ベースのパブリック／インターナルのクラウドで構成される、ネットワークという考え方は魅力的である。しかし、そのためには、すでに証明済みであり、革新的であり、商業面でサポートされている多種多様な提供物から、ビジネスとデベロッパーを盗み出すことになってしまう。
Even within the OpenStack membership, conflicts of interest exist. How supportive can Rackspace really be of other service providers without cannibalizing its own cloud revenue? Plus, it’s also considering offering Windows Azure as a service. Dell already sells Joyent’s cloud software, and it’s also an early Windows Azure Appliance partner. If Dell does offer OpenStack as an open source alternative, it will be just that — an alternative. Other partners will support the OpenStack platform, but that’s on top of existing support for AWS, VMware and other industry-leading offerings. Supporting OpenStack is one thing, but pushing it to the exclusion of other options is something else.

Will OpenStack attract a broad community of users? Yes.
Will OpenStack-based offerings and deployments gather enough market share to make current leaders lose sleep? That’s not such an obvious answer.
OpenStack は重要だろうか？ YES。
OpenStack は広範囲におよぶユーザー･コミュニティにとって魅力的だろうか？ YES。
OpenStack が市場を占有し、他の選択肢は衰退するだろうか？ それについては、YES とは答えられない。
